Would the NHL consider this?

This has been a no brainer thing that should of been in place for decades, and from time to time it gets brought up by hockey analysts. They NHL is forever holding itself back. I mean the potential for another legitimate award is a great way to increase fan base interest and promote conversations about the game.

I probably shouldn't have made that reply. I don't believe they should ever change the name of an award.

Norris is that, though. Same as how the Selke goes to the best two way guy. You will never see someone like Riley Nash win the Selke. I don't think there should be a pure defensive d-man award. The best d-men are the guys who can get it done both ways.

Sorry, but I don’t agree. You could argue the same for the winner of the Rocket Richard trophy, that since he’s so dominant at scoring goals, then he must be good at preventing them as well.
I believe it should be a dman in your top 4 who is consistently the one out there when his team is protecting a lead late in a game, or who is very reliable, even dominant, on the PK.
I just think it’s unfair to have two awards for forwards, but only one for dmen.

Can’t see them creating an award for a bottom pair, PK specialist. That’s all a ‘Defensive D Man’ is these days.
They should add a points award for a Defenseman with the Norris going to the ‘Best All Around’ player.

Agreed, but a guy like Erik Karlsson and Brent Burns has one won based basically on their offensive numbers. Erik Karlsson was never that great of a defender.

I think 100% they should add a trophy for best defensive defenseman. The dman that could win both of them together would be rare

I get that, but that’s what you get when you have humans voting. Can you quantify best defensive d-man? You win the Ross by having the most points, you win the Rocket by having the most goals. So if we can find a way to quantify best defensive d-man then I’d love to see it.

Exactly - and that really is the problem. Best defensive d-man does not have any stats to support that do they? I mean I am sure there must some way to come up with some new fancy stats that factor in numbers like zone starts, when they are on the ice, blocks, something like scoring chances denied..... who knows really though. Statistics (in a mathematical sense) can prove anything. You can use stats to calculate that a golf ball has a smooth surface, so I'm sure there is some anti-corsi or something that can be conjured up.

The Norris Trophy should still be for the best defenseman for history and continuity, but the idea of a trophy named the Bobby Orr Trophy for the best defensive defenseman would see a little off.

First we give one to the goalie with the best offense numbers, maybe even a rocket for the top goalie.
 
At the very least the Norris name should disappear (cancel it!). The Norris family controlled three teams during the original six era, and were tied to organized crime.
 
I think they should just not be so biased towards point totals in Norris Trophy Voting, I mean it's already at least a little bit biased for all the other trophies but it's probably the worst for Norris & Lady Byng.

The Lady Byng is apparently: "player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability" when really it's: "player with the least penalty minutes combined with a high standard of playing ability"
