Worst Maple Leaf Goalies of All-Time

Hey, what do you guys think of my list of the top 15 worst
Toronto Maple Leaf goalies. Agree with who I put on? Someone I missed?

It's normally hard to come up with a "worst ever" list since greatness is like a pyramid from top to bottom, but I wouldn't mind looking at your list. Can you list them here? Personally, I hate clicking 15 times for a top 15 list.

18 and 38 gamers, really.

Many were over 30 when acquired.

Are we really actually doing this?

Well... that's the thing with bad netminders.
They tend not to play for long.

(And those late-70ies/early-80'ies guy all beaten one another at some point, with the last of them being completely outplayed by two 19 years old kids who were not that great to begin with).

To be honest, I think the OP has been slightly mean against Paul Harrison, but that's just by looking things up on HR.

Removed the link.

Just list your goalies if you want us to critique the list, unless your real goal is to get clicks for your site (which is a different conversation).

Rick St. Croix

Beaupre was terrible in his brief Leaf tenure as well

Are we factoring in longevity (as a negative)?

They had the likes of Raycroft, Toskala, Pogge and Gustavsson in a short time who would just sink your season.

I may not be big fan of looking things from "worst goalie" angle, but with quick look I think it´s pretty decent list of goalies that didn´t make it in Toronto.

Pleasantly surprised that Bester and Crha wasn´t on the list. I don´t know if their bad reputation are entirely deserved.

With Jonas Gustavsson I felt that his hype was overblown. He had great season prior to moving to NA, but this being the greatest goalie outside NHL thing... I don´t know. He took big steps in relatively short time and had still his flaws.

I assume that you counted Maple Leafs history to 1917 (You mention Hap Holmes as Maple Leafs goalie). From the early days Art Brooks, Bert Lindsay and Mike Mitchell all had weakish stint with Toronto team and could be candidates.

This usually happens to the best players from europe. They get overhyped and rushed. In the case of Jonas he was viewed as a saviour.

Jonas lost both his parents and had heart issues during his time here.
I wouldn't state the latter part at all.

Any new Leaf is viewed as a saviour by somebody, but if you want to keep your blood pressure down, you ignore those people.

Among more recent guys, Vesa Toskala had a season and a half with the Leafs where he was so far behind the rest of the league in sv% while still holding down a starter workload that it was stunning. Sebastien Centomo wins the "small sample size" award by playing one game that the Leafs clearly didn't want him to.

I can't think of any horror stories from way back off the top of my head, unfortunately.

To the OP, post the list!

Michel Bunny Larocque... then Rick St.Croix who Toronto traded Larocque to get & though neither got much support from a
bunch of really bad teams in the early through mid-80's......both were unbelievably disappointingly feeble... make the list for sure.

I’m only going to include ones I saw since 1993;
Don Beaupre never won a single game for them.
Andrew Raycroft was probably the worst starter.
Vesa Toskala did have one good year and then two awful ones. By all accounts he was an awful teammate as well.
Trevor Kidd was probably the worst one who had a regular roster spot.

It is a tough poll due to the pyramid factor; if an NHL player is that awful they wont be playing for long.

Damn, I felt for Bunny. Recall a Leaf game against the Oilers and they just left Bunny out to dry. One play I recall was a Oiler penalty was ending and you could hear Bunny slamming his stick on the ice and not one Leaf responded. Easy breakaway goal for the Oilers. To go from the Habs to that mess had to be very disheartening for such a good guy. But yeah, I don't think he was ever that good an NHL goalie. Built up some nice numbers in Montreal playing the likes of the 70's Capitals and Rockies. Leafs, per usual, got snowed into believing he was something he was not.

Maybe not the most horrible Leaf goalie, but loved watching Bruce Gamble make incredible saves on routine shots.

He would glove a chest snipe, fall down, and hold it with outstretched arm near the post. Acrobatics at it's worst.
