One of my favorite tournaments, the World Junior A Challenge is less than a month away and I'm really excited. Run by Hockey Canada, this tournament is meant for them to showcase the talent playing in the ten Canadian Junior Hockey Leagues (not the CHL). They separate into two teams, one for the East (NOJHL, OJHL, CCHL, QJHL, MHL), the other for the West (BCHL, AJHL, SJHL, MJHL, SIJHL). This year, Switzerland and the Czech Republic will send their national under-20 teams. Russia will send their under-18 team. The US, as usual, will send players from the USHL who are not part of the National Team Development Program. They have won six out of the last seven tournaments.

On November 17, the United States named the first 20 players to their roster, all from the USHL. They will name one more defenseman and one more goaltender to the team before the tournament starts (NOTE: This information has been updated). Perhaps the most notable inclusion on the team is Chase Pearson, who played at this very event two years ago for Canada East. There are five NHL draft picks (Pearson, Ryan Zuhlsdorf, Kris Oldham, John Marino, Ryan Bednard). Only Zuhlsdorf and Mitch Reinke were on the team last year.

Here is the list:

Goaltenders:
Kris Oldham, Omaha Lancers (TB)
Ryan Bednard, Youngstown Phantoms (FLA)

Defensemen:
Andrew Peeke, Green Bay Gamblers
John Marino, Tri-City Storm (EDM)
Jack Ahcan, Cedar Rapids RoughRiders
Mitch Reinke, Cedar Rapids RoughRiders
Ryan Zuhlsdorf, Sioux City Musketeers (TB)
Spenser Young, Dubuque Fighting Saints
Keegan Ford, Dubuque Fighting Saints

Forwards:
Chase Pearson, Youngstown Phantoms (DET)
Tanner Laczynski, Chicago Steel
William Knierim, Dubuque Fighting Saints
Callahan Burke, Cedar Rapids RoughRiders
Liam Pecararo, Waterloo Black Hawks
Max Zimmer, Chicago Steel
Rem Pitlick, Muskegon Lumberjacks
Jake Wahlin, Tri-City Storm
Josh Wilkins, Sioux City Musketeers
Ross Colton, Cedar Rapids RoughRiders
Grant Jozefek, Lincoln Stars
Carson Meyer, Tri-City Storm

This will give others a chance to see what I have been seeing all season so far. Jack Ahcan, though only 5'7, is dynamic on the blue line. One of the most skilled defenseman to ever play for Cedar Rapids.

Czech Republic is sending U18 team. And I guess Switzerland will send U18 too.

Isn't Canada usually sending U-17 team? or is that a different tournament

Last year, Denmark sent their World Junior team. Including CHLers Ehlers and Bjorkstrand. Which was kind of against what the tournament rules are. But that game between the US and Denmark in the final was really exciting, with Tommy Novak's power play goal in overtime the difference.

Why isnt Sweden sending a team to this event? Or are they not invited?

Last year, Denmark sent their U-20 team. So it might be possible that the Swiss team are in. I'm a bit skeptical about the Czech sending their U20 team, tough. They'd destroy this tournament IMO.

Plus, who are the best Draft Eligible players in the tournament this year?
It was great to have a first-look at Connor and Boeser last year.

Hopefully czechs send their U18 as well, instead of the U20.

EDIT: They do send their U18.

Canada East's official roster is coming out today after the final scrimmage in Toronto.

Nicholas Latinovich (Orangeville Flyers goalie) and Noah Jordan (St. Mike's Buzzers) were my personal favourites to watch yesterday. The CP Canadiens players didn't play all too great despite there being many of them. The two Wellington Dukes forwards showed some solid chemistry, as did Josh Kosack and Tyler Rollo from the Blades during the first period.
