Numbers are amazing for ESPN given no US.

With US in the finals they would have done well over 1 million. Maybe more than that.

Anyone who is saying this tournament wasn't successful is boarderline brain dead.

Boarder:
- a person who receives regular meals when staying somewhere, in return for payment or services.
- a person who boards a ship during or after an attack.

Besides obvious language problems in your post, the TV rating for the World Cup have been abysmal for a tournament that was supposed to be the top of the top.

The best part of ESPN having the tournament was having two hockey men as their lead PXP. Steve Levy, as I had always suspected back in the day, is perfectly capable of being the lead guy. John Buccigross accounted well for himself as a #2, and wasn't the caricature of himself that he tends to be on Twitter. Problem is that Barry Melrose is archaic, but if ESPN ever got the NHL back, I hope they'd bring back Ray Ferraro to be their lead color as I don't think Melrose would want to go on the road as often as he would need to.

Finally this useless garbage is over. Now bring on the Spengler Cup and World Juniors where we see real hockey.

The Spergler cup not even televised anywhere... What is the obsession with this tourney in Canada? Not even 3rd grade tournament, more like 5th.

4 nation European juniors is massive compared to this

Because there is a lot of history in that tournament and market themselves as an invitational and not something they are not.

I don't know about ratings, but given I was able to snag a pair of ducats in the first row of a 300 section behind the Europe net for Game 1 online at $40 per ticket, with a face value nearly 5 times that, and that there were at least 4,000 sold but empty seats in the ACC, the Canada-Europe final had to have been a complete nightmare scenario for the NHL. The only thing worse would have been, say, a Europe-Czech Republic final.

NHL brought this on themselves by formatting it in this manner and putting it together in such a short time frame.

I don't know what is the obsession with it in Canada, but the Spengler Cup is just non pretentious, harmless fun in a very bucolic setting. At Christmas time, Graubünden is probably the nicest place I have ever seen. Add the history of it + the Davos arena that looks like a cathedral... It has its own fascination.

lol this should be interesting.

Not a single person is talking about this at work today. No one cares. At all. This is in Canada. I'm in Canada and no one gives a **** that we just won the WORLD CUP. No partys, no hype, no celebration. This tournament is a joke.

Not even close to best on best in those tournaments. Although I do enjoy the WJS just to see how we do with 4 or 5 of our best players not available.

Listening to Bettman during last night's game was hilarious. Cringeworthy. At least Levy (I think it was) had the stones to bring up the topic of the olympics.

I'm shocked at how good these numbers are. Over 7 million tuned into the game at some point, holy moley. Strange paradox here, apparently there's no buzz, nobody cares etc., yet all those people tune in to watch the game. Bizarre.

Laughing about this attempted spin. The audience for a supposed best on best, in prime time, can't match half the audience for the Olympic best on best game that started before the sun came up for most Canadians... and it's shockingly good! It reached two million fewer people at peak than Canada's last WJC gold medal game... and it's shockingly good! This pouting because you were called out for being wrong about things you spouted off about is tiring.

In the Czech Republic:
against Team Europe 480 000 avg, 1 100 000 reach.
against Russia 226/227 000 avg, 800 000 reach - this is the most disappointing stat and on par with Euro Hockey Tour
against NA23 200 000 avg 600 000 reach.
other evening (in Europe) matches had 100-150k.
No early morning match had even 100k (Canada, USA, the finals)

World Championship averages over 1 300 000. Reasons are obvious, better time, more hype here and better chance for success. Olympics are close to 2M.

For example WJC 2015 in Canada had average viewership 135k with the most viewed match QF against SVK which had 458k.

So yeah, pretty bad.

Ya... Given how the organizers wanted this tournament to be viewed, and regarded, these numbers aren't very good at all.

To put things in perspective...
2010 Olympic Final: Averaged 16+ million. The lowest rated Canada game was the opener against Norway and it still drew 6.2 million.
2014 Olympic Final: Averaged 8.5 million for a game that started at 7am eastern.
2015 WJC Final: Averaged 6 million. Canada's QF and SF games also easily out drew the WCup final.
2015 WC Final: Averaged 1.5 million
2016 WC Final: Averaged 1.365 million

The WCup final drew audiences that were much more comparable to a IIHF WC final (a tournament that many people will say no one cares about) than an Olympic or even WJC final.

Unlike the Olympics, or any of the other tournaments I listed above, the WCup would have made the NHL money so I'm sure they will consider it a success, but IMHO it ended up falling somewhat flat.

I'm sure ESPN wanted better numbers, but they don't broadcast hockey ever. If it was on NBCSN what would the numbers have been?

Come on now... See posts #443, 444, 445...

Wow, your's and CyNick's expectations are really low. For a tournament that is supposed to replace the Olympics, expectations should be a lot higher.

Post #443 doesn't show on my screen for some mysterious reason.

I'm just surprised so many people watched, thought there would be less for sure considering Team Europe was our opponent. What's the problem, should I have expected more viewers? I thought the numbers would be less than the semifinal against Russia myself. Now had it been team NA in the final that would be another story, who knows what the numbers would have been.

You have fallen for somebody's spin here.
