Well it is a flop regarding expectations. All the games should've been sold out if we go by a) the hype b) 12 years! c) cnucks actually being hockey fans, instead of gloryhunters; or just nhl team supporters. Thats totally ok, but it doesn't seem like it's "your game" anymore nucks.

Canadian hockey fans are smart. Just cuz many didn't get swallowed up in the hype of a supposed World Cup hardly means anything. [MOD]

I think the European team is terrific. I love how these guys from countries where hockey is a minor sport are able to compete for something big for a change.

Yes, if only there was some sort of way for players from different countries to come together on the same team and compete for a prize. Too bad nothing like that already exists. If only we had more of that, and less of pesky international hockey between actual national teams.

I ve been telling all a long that this is worse than the miniscule Karjala Cup. It is mind boggling and sad.

Fin-Swe 470k is the worst Sweden game that ive heard in large tournament. Probably lowest in the last 20 years.

I think the same game at the 2004 World Cup had similar viewership and back then it was on analogue tv and Nelonen was still not available everywhere IIRC.

I'm not sure. I seem to remember at least the Final drawing a very good rating in Finland.

Ever heard of the chicago cubs?

Yes Toronto is not filled with hockey fans they are leaf fans.

lol

Toronto is a hockey town (and a sports town in general). I know it hurts for you to admit it, but that's the truth.

Also, how dare people from a city cheer for their local team, amirite?

From old Jatkoaika-thread:
FIN-SWE: 592k
FIN-CZE: 470k

And these games were aired in prime time. The semi-final and final were aired in the middle of the night, so it's hard to believe that ratings for those were better than a couple of hundred thousand viewers.

Hockey is a minor sport in Slovakia and Switzerland?

Indeed that poster's statement doesn't make sense.

I thought that hockey in Slovakia was #1, but I am not Slovakian.

In Switzerland I can confirm that hockey is #2 behind soccer. Every other sport lags far behind.

It isn't. But it is in France, Austria, Denmark, and I would argue for Norway, Slovenia, and Germany as well. I might be wrong though.

No idea about Slovenia, but in Norway it is, and in Germany all sports except football is minor. Football in Germany is like if you'd combine NFL, MLB and NBA in USA. I remember a german on this board typing, that in Germany the 2nd biggest sport is so far behind football it feels like the 4th or 5th biggest sport.

So -20% from the 2004 world cup. I remembered 2004 being more popular.

I guess this years is not massively bad then, all things considered.

Very little excitement around this in Canada right now. Feels like a pre-season tune up game

I think it's tough timing, almost like the opening act before a headliner (NHL season) at a concert.

It's not timing, it's no rivalry and a Canadian juggernaut.

Saturday's semifinal showdown between Canada and Russia produced the biggest hockey audience in more than a year, with the game averaging 3.1 million viewers on CBC and Sportsnet. (CBC gets the bulk of those viewers, but Rogers collects all the ad dollars.)

in more than a year? So that means it's more than any NHL playoff game, any World Championships game, or even any World Juniors game? Not bad.

It probably would've been quite more if the tournament was being held regularly, like after 4 years again.

It's actually rather unimpressive if we compare it to other best v best competitions; which this World Cup was supposed to rival.

It absolutely tanked in the US, and apparently was rather ho-hum in Europe.

Sorry but you can't polish a turd.

But the only other best on best is the olympics. And the ratings from that is highly unlike any other sporting event.

I am guessing if swimming ever got onto national television it would barely get 100k fans to watch it. But olympics i am guessing it gets in the millions for even the qualifying rounds.

Going by olympic ratings is not a good thing to go by because you have fans even in canada that have never seen or heard of any of the players get behind them for the olympics.

FIFA World Cup has better ratings than Olympic soccer... But the Olympic soccer isn't "best on best", which probably hurts their ratings.

Similarly, this tournament isn't best on best, because half the teams either aren't countries or are countries with handicaps. I know that personally, and among most of my friends, this distinction has driven down our interest in watching the tournament. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a common sentiment. The young NA team was "fun", but it also completely pulled my interest out of following Canada, because I just don't see it as a best on best tournament.
