We'll see what the ratings are if Canada reaches the finals. In the a Olympics, it was over 15M IIRC, so almost half the country.

I'd be surprised if this tournaments finals got more than ~3-4M or so.

HOW could the World Cup of hockey be losing to BASEBALL?? I thought hockey was a religion in Canada!!

Must be annoying for you that the former is far more popular in the world and even on this board.

There are very few opinions on message boards that I value. Given the state of this thread, the fact that this board likes the world championship more, tells me all I need to know about the value of the event.

Montreal would have had way better attendance.

Toronto is a Leaf town. Not a hockey town or even a sports town.

Montreal did not even sell out on their portions of the last world juniors tournament I am told. Toronto has 3x the population of Montreal.

If you think Toronto is only a Leafs town, then try telling that the all the Jays fans out there. Toronto leads the AL in attendance this year! Also the Raptors have a huge raucous following here after successful runs recently.

I for one am a Raps fan first, a Jays fan a very close second and everything else.... So there! . :neener:

Because it's a joke event with no real feeling of glory to it that's held in the summer time. I'm still playing outdoor sports and going camping, not exactly the time of year people get in to hockey.

But Canada Cup 87 are considered the 3 greatest games EVER and it was held at the same time of the year!

I could be wrong but I'd guess that these people are mostly Jays fans, not baseball fans. For example, I'd guess that much more people in the US watch the World Series when their team isn't in it than people in Toronto.

LOL...the World Series ratings in the U.S. are less than half of what they were in 1980. Baseball is nowhere near as big in the states as it was just 30 to 40 years ago!

Guess all you want, I guess you're incorrect.

I just paid $60 each (CAD with fees and taxes included) for a pair of tickets to tomorrow night's game. They're up high but they're dead centre ice. I know it's Canada-Europe by this is a best on best tournament. Pretty crazy.

Out of towners bailing, getting what they can for their tickets. League already fleeced them, now Torontonians are fleecing them as well.

Wow, sweet! Where did you get a deal like that? I only ask because that's a good bit cheaper than anything showing on Stubhub.

Enjoy the game! :yo:

Leftovers? Lol oh my talk about trolling the Slovaks and the rest of Europe. They beat everyone else except North American teams.

I think the European team is terrific. I love how these guys from countries where hockey is a minor sport are able to compete for something big for a change.

Agreed. Sure they have a handful of legit stars but it just goes to show how much a team can accomplish when it has heart.

Absolutely! It's a shame how many hockey "fans" here are scoffing at this team as if it was some kind of joke. Mostly it was the people who hated the tournament anyway and were telling everyone not to watch. No they said, players couldn't possibly be motivated when they weren't playing for their own country etc., so glad this team has showed these skeptics just how wrong they are.

If I wasn't Canadian, I'd be cheering hard for Team Europe. Come to think of it, I will be cheering for them. Not to win, but to put up a good fight. :)

Toronto st Michaels majors. Gone
Brampton Battalion. Gone
Mississauga Ice Dogs. Gone (new team back in Mississauga doesn't get any fan support, really)

Marlies. Not a big following

Leafs. I have never paid less than $150 for a ticket. Ever. That's top row, upper bowl, weekday game, lousy opponent. The secondary resale market is disgusting in Toronto. But prices will Never improve because leaf fans are easily the most loyal fans in all of North American sports. We will always fill the building

Ever heard of the chicago cubs?

Yes Toronto is not filled with hockey fans they are leaf fans.

Ratings (avg) from Finland:
FIN-SWE: 471k
FIN-RUS: 298k
CAN-RUS: 88k
FIN-NAT: not enough to make ratings list

For comparison:
- Three Euro Hockey Tour games in 2015/11 had avg rating of 462k
- WJC 2015/2016 round-robin games of Team Finland had at least 700k rating each, final had 1981k
- WHC 2016: lowest 973k (FIN-FRA) and highest 2305k (final). Even USA-CAN round robin game got 959k

Conclusion: Even games against Sweden and Russia couldn't draw more than EHT level ratings, which tells a lot. Game against NA U23 wasn't even a blip in the radar.

I ve been telling all a long that this is worse than the miniscule Karjala Cup. It is mind boggling and sad.

Fin-Swe 470k is the worst Sweden game that ive heard in large tournament. Probably lowest in the last 20 years.

That was 29 years ago, when most people had few TV options and it felt like a matter of national pride competing against players they were previously segregated from, not a money grab put on by the NHL.

Remember that series very well. It was like us (the free world) vs. them (the Communists)
