after waking up and seeing Europe beat Sweden the parity in this tournament while getting all of the best players on a team together no matter what is epic.

so happy it replaced the olympics and the inaugrual tournament so far has blown my expectations away.

finally a true all star tournament.

It is the rigorous qualifying campaign that makes the World Cup so amazing. To think of all the hard work these teams put in just making through the qualifying stages, there's no doubt they deserve to be there.

I would have never expected Team North America to qualify over Team Africa but there you go.

Those are certainly the main ones (there are others, refereeing for example). No shootouts is the biggest one by far IMO, settling elimination games by a shootout turns the Olympics into a gimmick for me.

Maybe the main reason for the World Cup being better is that there are so many different sports in the Olympics. The NHL does one only thing, and it does it very well.

Edit - I'm talking about World Cups in general, not this one which suffers IMO due to the gimmick teams. Not sure what's worse, gimmick teams or gimmick rules.

Arguably so.

I look forward to seeing Sweden and Finland merged into one team for the next Bettman Cup. Just think of how competitive it will be! Hard to see how anyone could argue against it.

I recall setting up a thread about a year ago when I argued for the NHL pulling out of the Olympics and sticking to the World Cup precisely because I was so horrified by the prospect of another Nagano scenario when a mickey mouse all-star game contest is used to eliminate teams in the medal round.

But then Bettman OD'd on crack and came up with something even more insulting, sending me running in the other direction, back to the IOC/IIHF.
