Though it was nice that we out-shot EU by 18. So...I guess that's something.
Can someone who knows whats up explain why Byfuglien wasn't in the lineup tonight? I thought Tortorella had a lot of very good things to say about him the other day, so was he just sick or something?

This is no 1996 World Cup team. I can't believe this management group even dares to try to pass that ******** on us.
That club was loaded with talent, and did not use a bunch of pluggers like this group. The 96 team did not leave behind the talents of Kessel, Okposo, Fowler, Faulk, Shattenkirk, Ryan, etc.. in favor of "grinders".
The 1996 club made a conscious effort to build a "stronger" team, but a stronger overall team that could play with anyone. Yes they had tough players, but the "grinders" we brought were guys like Billy Guerin, Keith Tkachuk, Adam Deadmarsh, and Joel Otto. Only Otto was not a gifted scorer. Tkachuk was coming off a 50 goal year, and Deadmarsh and Guerin were rising power forward stars. We simply brought the best players possible and some of them happened to have a lot of grit and size. This group just brought grinders for the sake of it seems. I have always been a big supporter of both Jack and Erik Johnson, but neither really needed to be here. Same for Niskanen who belongs nowhere near this team.
Abdelkader has done zilch for me. Same for Dubinsky. Byfuglien not dressing today was embarrassing to say the least.
Look at the defense from 1996. Phil Housley was our 7th defensemen, and even he admitted that! That group was loaded. They had Chelios, Suter, Leetch, D. Hatcher, Schneider, and K. Hatcher - simply put they did not leave anyone at home that belonged. This group was the best puck moving group that I have seen, and that is what is sorely missing here. Shattenkirk, Fowler, and Faulk over Niskanen and the Johnsons would have made a massive difference. This is no 96 team USA.
There is just too much similar players here, and what seems to be very little passion or cohesion. And that stems from the top down. This group doesn't look like they believe they can win, and on paper it shows that. This group of players knows they have been asked to do a lot with a lot of firepower left at home. Though lets not kid ourselves, this team still has a ton of NHL stars and talent- they simply shouldn't have lost like this. Kane, Pavelski, Parise, Patches, Wheeler, and JVR are more than enough skill to get the job done.
I still have hope for this team, as they can still make the next round, but a side of me wants them to lose so Torts and upper management can walk in shame for leaving home what they did. I cannot take another team built by Jim Johansson pro or amateur. I hate his choices for coaches and gm's 8 out of 10 times. He needs to go, I have been saying it for years.
It is a lot to ask for a team USA to play without having access to Gaudreau, Eichel, Saad, Galchenyuk, Trocheck, Larkin etc...but that is another point altogether.
Bottom line is I have loved the Canada Cup/World Cup since I was a kid. I want this to happen every 4 years as I love watching the best vs best. I bleed USA Hockey so I want them to win and bring success to this tournament for it to continue. But this could be a massive flop if this team doesn't make the semi finals, and if that happens we might not see another one again...
I hope I am so wrong on Tuesday and this team comes out flying. They are embarrassed and should feel ashamed. If they have any pride in country or what this tournament means then they will bring their best and defeat Canada like they did last week. I know they can do it inspite of our coaches and management. But if they don't, this might be the last World Cup we see for sometime as without a US audience, it will flop massively.
I dunno, the last two World Cups hardly registered on the American radar. September is literally the worst month to have a hockey tournament in america. I still think a USA bomb out will really just kill the asinine North America concept. If we had a full roster I would say this tournament could be worse than 2006, but as it is, I kind of expected this.
Team scores no goals = Torts puts Abdelkader on Kane's line.
I really hope this is the end of Torts, Burke, and Lombardi with USAH. It may turn out to be the only positive.
Sitting Palms and Buff was a sad mistake. Though it was nice that we out-shot EU by 18. So...I guess that's something.

The current management at USA hockey is more concerned with trying to prove a point then with sending the team with the best chance to win. Burke, Torts and company want to show the rest of the world that their brand of hockey still works at the highest levels. While Sweden, Canada and Russia have all moved towards rosters focused on speed and skill, Burke and co. continue to live in the stone age.

The only thing that would really be bad is if the team loses the rest of their games but stay competitive. At least if they get demolished by Canada there might be some turnover amongst management.
We're about to see a golden age here in terms of skilled USA hockey players. Kane is the most skilled player the USA has ever produced and possibly the best offensive player in the world right now. Eichel, Gaudreau, Matthews... I just hope the change comes in time so that we get to see these guys playing on the best possible teams we can put together.
