Okay, so if you want to make a really big fire, you need big pieces of hardwood as your base, build them in a square with one side always propped up by the next one, like a chain. Then build the next level with slightly smaller pieces, but at a 45-degree angle, making sure to keep the middle open. Add a third level if possible. Then lay pieces upward leaned against the structure, ensuring you leave at least an inch of space between them. Put your kindling and anything you're using to start the fire in some of the open spaces, ensuring to leave plenty of openings.

If conditions are wet, start with just the base four pieces, then make a teepee small fire with mostly kindling to get things started. Then slowly build the rest of the structure.

As the fire grows, get a good poking stick and keep adjusting it so there is plenty of airflow and a strong structure. Add logs as needed to achieve this.
