This is my attempt to construct a record of women's hockey teams playing in eastern Canada during the 1916-17 season. This will be divided into three parts: Montreal's city league, exhibition games, and games between the four strongest teams of that season (the Cornwall Victorias, Montreal Westerns, Ottawa Alerts, and Westboro Pets).
Montreal Ladies Hockey League
Team statistics:
Skater statistics:
Goalie statistics:
Game log:
The final two games between the Westerns and Socials were exhibition matches played at Mount Royal Rink, rather than the Jubilee Rink where actual league games were held.
Notes:
Games played in Montreal followed NHA rules (including full-blown body checking).
Including two exhbition games played at Mount Royal Rink, the Montreal Westerns gave up only 3 goals in 11 games in the Montreal league. Oddly, they gave up all three goals to the worst team in Montreal's league, the Socials. The Socials were also the only team to give the Westerns' their only blemish in the Montreal league, a tie.
The Westerns switched from Hart to Chapman for their February 24th match with the Cornwall Victorias and never looked back. Unfortunately, the newspapers did not always list goaltenders, and they very much did change during the season in the few instances they were listed. As such, I've decided to list only the Westerns' goaltenders due to the lack of information otherwise.
Exhibition Games
Team statistics:
Skater statistics:
Goalie statistics:
Game log:
Notes:
There are undoubtedly numerous exhibition games that the Cornwall Victorias played that are missing from here. As one newspaper article put it, the Albertine Lapensee-led Cornwall team was very much in high demand.
May Carpenter was typically a skater for the Cornwall Victorias, not a goaltender. This is not unique to her, though. Hilda Dawson also played a couple of (bigger) games as goaltender before a game at cover point before becoming a spare. (Unlike Hilda Dawson, though, Carpenter would remain in the starting lineup for the Victorias.)
Unsurprisingly, the top 4 teams that I identified at the beginning were undefeated in exhibition.
In the exhibition game against the Aylmer Melbas (the Melbas' first ever game), the Westboro Pets played their spares instead of their starting forwards. The three spares scored 8 goals (their regular point, Annie Turner, tallied an additional goal).
The games played between the Ottawa Alerts and Pittsburgh Polar Maids followed "six-skater rules" that included a rover. Eva Ault, who would later be known as "Queen of the Ice", was still a spare during normal games. In Pittsburgh, she played rover and tallied her only goal of the 1916-17 season (at least out of the games that I could find). All three games were played on consecutive days.
After the Ottawa Alerts returned to Ontario on March 1st, they played the Toronto Ladies of the Aura Lee Country Club (shortened here to the Toronto Ladies), making it their fourth game in four nights. The game was played with "six-skater rules", with Edith Anderson playing rover and Eva Ault at center. The obviously exhausted Alerts played the Toronto Ladies to a scoreless draw.
Note that goaltender A. McCarthy is also known as "Mrs. Art McCarthy", where Arthur McCarthy is the name of her husband. Her actual given name is Myrtle.
The Top 4 Teams Against Each Other

Notes:
Games played in Montreal, Ottawa, and Cornwall followed NHA rules (including full-blown body checking).
The bolded games are ones that are for the "Dey Cup" (also known as the "Dey Trophy", which was probably very confusing since there was a "Dey Trophy" for the Ottawa high school champions). The Dey Cup was donated as the trophy for the lady champions of Ottawa, the Alerts, following their victory over Westboro on February 16th. Mirroring the Stanley Cup challenges of old, both the Montreal Westerns and Cornwall Victorias issued challenges to the Ottawa Alerts for the Dey Cup.
Ottawa defended the Dey Cup against Montreal but lost to Cornwall.
The Cornwall Victorias split their team into two on February 24th. One half travelled to Montreal to play the Westerns, while the other half stayed home to play the Westboro Pets. The normal starters who travelled to Montreal were Albertine Lapensee, Eveline Bourgeon, and Evelyn Lafave. The normal starters who stayed home to face Westboro were starting goaltender F. M. Dawson, Ada McDonald, and May Carpenter.
The biggest shock for me was how poorly the Montreal Westerns fared against strong competition this season. They went 0-6 against the Cornwall Victorias and 0-2 against the Ottawa teams. Vautier scored 22 confirmed goals in 11 games in the Montreal league, and she scored 6 goals in 3 exhibition games for a tidy 2 goals per game in each setting. Against strong competition, she scored 2 goals in 6 games against Cornwall and only 1 goal in 2 games against the Ottawa teams. (To be fair, in the February 6th game against Cornwall, she was playing as a spare... so it might be 3 goals in 7 games overall rather than 8 games).
Any superlatives that have been used to describe Albertine Lapensee in the past still hold today. Her 3.9 goals per game against strong competition more than doubles that of 2nd place Edith Anderson (1.6 goals per game) and 3rd place Tena Turner (1.25 goals per game). She was just as dangerous when playing defence (scoring 5 goals as a cover point against the Alerts on January 19th, and 7 goals as a point against the Westerns on February 24th). If we include confirmed assists, Lapensee (4 points per game) still doubles up Anderson (2 points per game).
There's a great write-up on Albertine Lapensee by @sr edler here.
My personal end-of-season First All-Star Team:
Goalie: F. M. Dawson (Cornwall Victorias)
Point: Muriel Lee (Westboro Pets)
Cover Point: Bee Hagan (Ottawa Alerts)
Forward: Albertine Lapensee (Cornwall Victorias)
Forward: Edith Anderson (Ottawa Alerts)
Forward: Tena Turner (Westboro Pets)
My personal end-of-season Second All-Star Team:
Goalie: Myrtle McCarthy (Westboro Pets)
Point: D. Arnold (Montreal Westerns)
Cover Point: Isabel Gallagher (North End Stanleys/Maisonneuves)
Forward: Agnes Vautier (Montreal Westerns)
Forward: Ada McDonald (Cornwall Victorias)
Forward: O. Stevens (North End Stanleys)
Any feedback, additions, and corrections are welcome!
EDIT (July 16, 2023): I added one additional exhibition game to the list above.
EDIT (July 21, 2023): I edited the Montreal league tables to reflect new information provided by @WhiteTiger in the post here.
EDIT (July 22, 2023): We have finally a name for "Mrs. Art McCarthy", Myrtle, from here. I've also corrected "Kate Meyers" to Katie Mears. For those interested, the link provides a nice summary of the short history of the Westboro Pets.
EDIT (April 13, 2024): The Quebec Telegraph reports an assist for Eva Lord on Vautier's goal in the February 24 match between the Cornwall Victorias and Montreal Westerns, so I have updated the above.
