Pre-tournament schedule announced for 2020 IIHF Women’s World Championship

Seven Nova Scotia communities to host 10 games from March 25-29 in advance of women’s worlds

HALIFAX & TRURO, N.S. – As excitement continues to build in Nova Scotia with the 2020 IIHF Women’s World Championship just over one month away, Hockey Canada has unveiled the pre-tournament schedule.

Seven communities across Nova Scotia will play host to nine competing teams and five women’s U SPORTS teams for 10 pre-tournament games from March 25-29, before the puck officially drops March 31 on the women’s worlds in Halifax and Truro.

“The pre-tournament schedule is yet another milestone as we continue to prepare to welcome the world to Nova Scotia in March, and to work with a number of communities throughout Nova Scotia to allow hockey fans in the region an opportunity to experience the 2020 IIHF Women’s World Championship,” said Grant MacDonald, general manager of the event. “We look forward to providing a world-class experience for fans and teams in all seven pre-tournament communities, and to use the Jed Ritcey Fund from the 2017 World Junior A Challenge legacy to invite students from various schools in the Truro area to games at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre.”

U.S. Roster Announced for 2020 IIHF Women’s World Championship

Team to compete for sixth-straight gold medal March 31-April 10

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Hockey announced today the roster for the U.S. Women's National Team that will compete in the 2020 International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship, March 31-April 10 in Halifax and Truro, Nova Scotia.

The roster features 18 members of the U.S. Women’s National Team that helped the U.S. capture its fifth-straight gold medal at the 2019 IIHF Women’s World Championship, including Cayla Barnes (Eastvale, Calif.), Kacey Bellamy (Westfield, Mass.), Megan Bozek (Buffalo Grove, Ill.), Hannah Brandt (Vadnais Heights, Minn.), Dani Cameranesi (Plymouth, Minn.), Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.), Alex Cavallini (Delafield, Wis.), Jesse Compher (Northbrook, Ill.), Kendall Coyne Schofield (Palos Heights, Ill.), Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wis.) Megan Keller (Farmington Hills, Mich.), Amanda Kessel (Madison, Wis.), Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho), Emily Matheson (Buffalo, N.Y.), Kelly Pannek (Plymouth, Minn.), Maddie Rooney (Andover, Minn.), Hayley Scamurra (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Lee Stecklein (Roseville, Minn.).

The roster also includes forwards Britta Curl (Bismarck, N.D.), Abby Roque (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) and Grace Zumwinkle (Excelsior, Minn.); defender Savannah Harmon (Downers Grove, Ill.), and goaltender Aerin Frankel (New York, N.Y.).

The players represent nine states. Minnesota leads the way with six athletes, while Illinois has four. New York and Wisconsin each have three representatives. Massachusetts (2), Michigan (2), California (1), Idaho (1), and North Dakota (1) are also represented.

Women's hockey championship cancelled over coronavirus concerns

A women's world hockey championship has been wiped out by disease for a second time, with host Canada the loser of this year's tournament.

The International ice Hockey Federation cancelled the tournament scheduled for March 31 to April 10 in Halifax and Truro, N.S., because of concerns over the spread of the new coronavirus.

"It is with great regret that we must take this action," IIHF president Rene Fasel said Saturday in a statement.
"Nevertheless, the decision has been made due to safety concerns for the well-being of players, officials, and spectators.

"Ultimately the IIHF Council feels that there has not been enough of an improvement to the coronavirus situation to allow us to safely host a 10-team international tournament within this timeframe." ...

Crazy this has been cancelled . I used to live in Truro , and it would have been great for the town to host these games - even if they were getting pool B games. It would have drawn a lot of people out and been good for the town economically .

Hopefully when the games happen Truro gets to host again.

This virus, while fatal to many in the last couple months, has been blown way out of proportion IMO. The tournament is in NOVA SCOTIA for crying out loud.

They canceled the tournament, but Team Russia is still preparing to future tournaments and played a friendly against Krylya Sovetov U15 kids. Kids beat Russian national women team 2-0. Krylya Sovetov isn't even a top Moscow region team, let alone top Russian one, and they probably played by female rules, i.e. without hits.
