Woman’s fart during surgery causes fire and leaves her with serious burns

A woman was badly burned during an April surgery in Tokyo when a laser ignited her fart, according to a report in the Straits Times.

The patient, in her 30s, was having a procedure that involved using a laser on her cervix at Tokyo Medical University. When she passed gas, the laser ignited it. She was burned badly on her waist and legs, though the report does not indicate her condition.

The operation took place in April.

“When the patient's intestinal gas leaked into the space of the operation (room), it ignited with the irradiation of the laser, and the burning spread, eventually reaching the surgical drape and causing the fire,” an October report from external experts concluded.

A committee of external experts who examined the case said in a report released on Oct 28 that no flammable materials were in the operation room during the surgery.

It also mentioned that the operation equipment was functioning normally.

"When the patient's intestinal gas leaked into the space of the operation (room), it ignited with the irradiation of the laser, and the burning spread, eventually reaching the surgical drape and causing the fire," the report said.

I can't imagine how often surgeons must hear people's farts. Pretty much every patient is under heavy anesthesia.

they don't allow it anymore (for good reason) But my Moms an endoscopy nurse and take your kid to work days were the WORST. Imagine the farts you witness when they snake a 6 foot garden hose up your butt with a camera and air sneaks out

I honestly don't know what my reaction would be if I went to get an endoscopy and the nurse brought her goddamn kid into the room to watch
