Prospect Info: With the 85th pick in the 2016 entry draft, the Ducks pick - Joshua Mahura

#87 on our Draft list.

Joshua Mahura injured his knee just two games into the season. As a result he missed the rest of the regular season. Mahura came back in time for the playoffs, and put up four points in 17 games.

Mahura is a good skater, who uses this ability to play a strong defensive game. He is highly mobile and tough to beat one-on-one. Mahura maintains good gap control, not allowing attackers to get by him very often. He understands positioning and shuts down passing and shooting lanes. Mahura blocks shots, and isn’t afraid to put his body on the line.

Interesting pick. Scouts must have seen things they really liked in the small sample of games they got to see him in.

Sounds like a promising write up, don't mind adding a defensive d-man to the system - especially one that can skate well.

what are your thoughts on Mahura and his ceiling? graduating from the WHL and more than doubling his output from the season prior. Going from 8g and 12a to 22g and 47a last year, and his +/- was pretty good at +36, his defensive game improved this past season. There is a pretty good article on his strengths with video samples as well as his weaknesses. Really informative article.

You were only looking at his Regina stats from 2 seasons ago. He was traded mid-season. His totals from that year were 17g and 36a.

As the poster before said, those were just Pats stats.... so not exactly doubling his out put but definitely increasing his production.

Personally I like mahura a lot, I think he should have been on the WJ team last year, He has decent size at 6'1 190ish(prob 200+ by time he gets nhl time)…. great skater, and offensive instincts.... his defensive game probably wont ever be his strong suit, but offensively he should be solid... I think he has been somewhat underrated and overlooked as far as prospects go... not much talk about him ever but hes been dominating. I hope he can become a reliable 2way guy, with offensive upside.. but as of right now he reminds me a lot of Shea Theodore. The big problem for him is hes lined up behind Fowler, Lindholm, Larsson and Pettersson… so who knows when he will get a trial... but I feel like the team liked him a lot at camp/preseason.

He played the right side a lot for Regina from the games I saw.

I think we will be trading Larsson/Pettersson to potentially make room for him in a couple years.

I was hoping we’d target Galchenyuk from you guys and I thought Mahura would be primary piece coming back. Seriously doubt we’ll trade for Patches though so I don’t see any scenario now where he could be traded to Habs anyways

A one-for-one trade for any of the more desirable, established NHL wingers of the Habs would not be fair value, especially if we are talking about a top goal-scorer like Max Pacioretty.

But, the Western team also has a lot of other interesting up-and-comers such as Sam Steel and Troy Terry that could entice Montreal and be great supplementary pieces to pry away the captain.

Yes, I know the article is old, but still.

How did he look in his 1st NHL game against the Avalanche?

Good on the PP and in 3 on 3. Got trapped a few times in the d zone trying to get the puck out and lost a few battles he should have won. Not quite as fast as I thought he would be.

He’s going to be an NHL player but still needs a lot of work.

I really hope he stays, so much more potential than Petersson or even Larsson at this point. I've always gotten an Alec Martinez vibe when I watch him play.

Mahura will get his chance to stay in the future. He's getting his cup of coffee now and will be down in San Diego again sooner rather than later - and that's the right call to make, as much like Lundestrom, Steel and Terry he looks like he has the talent but he's not NHL ready yet and is better served in the AHL.
