With potentially $5M in new cap space what assets might be outbound?

LMAO Tampa lost in an early exit to Columbus the year before they made they made those moves.
Dude. Do you think that our group of guys who have gotten bounced in the first round every year for five years, while finishing 4th place a couple times, is in any way comparable to the f***in Lightning? The guys who lost badly after the best regular season in over twenty years, and making the 3rd round two out of the three years prior? A team that obviously had forward talent, goaltending, and defense completely sorted out, compared to whatever the f*** we think we are?

I truly believe this Leafs team is capable of great things. That does not mean I think it is overly likely of achieving them, or am willing to bet on it. I believe that buying big rentals is a reasonable option for a hockey team, but if this was poker I wouldn't go all in with this hand.

I think I'm especially jaded about rentals this year because last year was the opportunity. It's weird seeing people say that we'll never have an opportunity like this again. What, 5m in cap space? The East is completely stacked and it's a murderer's row of teams to try and go up against. Florida looks incredible, Tampa is a contender to threepeat, and Boston is the name of the demon in our dreams. And that's just our own f***in' division...

Last year was the real opportunity. The road to the conference finals was paved with shitty Canadian teams and our guys couldn't do it. The Habs managed to capture lightning in a bottle for a miracle run and nothing can take that away from them, but they f***ing sucked then and our boys lost to them. Losing JT hurt us, but we were still clearly the better team and our guys HAD to have been able to rally around losing the captain like that. That is an utterly essential moment where all the chips are down and the team shows you what they're made of. And our guys showed us they were done after they lost game 5. Then they had the healthcare workers in the building as a special treat for game 7 and they f***ing stank. God, it was just so obvious that they would that it's beyond embarassing. They stank so bad all of my Leafs stuff is still in a drawer, except for my Matthews jersey and a single hoodie. This team showed us what they were made of, and it stank.

Teams change. The performance of yesteryear does not dictate what a team will accomplish in the future. The Capitals are the example of a team who chugs along but never makes it until they finally do. We have a long way to go to reach Caps status, they were winning rounds and President's Trophies, but the lesson is that teams can still develop and grow. I've often said that this Leafs team only needs to get the recipe right to win it all. We have enough talent on this team that deep runs are very possible. The elusive cup window has been open all this time (which is why this is all so depressing) and it remains open. The Leafs can do this, and this year is as good as any to finally do it.

But until the day that they finally do break through, I do not want Dubas going all-in for a year with this core. Go ahead and make some additions that will tune the team up and get them looking good, but the big assets are for a team that is better than we have today, even if that's only from having finally slain the first round demon. I’m ever an optimist as a fan, but I am not “Robertson and a 1st” optimistic.

no. One. Said. Get. A. f***ing. Rental. Get. It. Through. Your. Thick. Head.

I have been consistent in saying, if it’s for a younger player with term then I’d be open to moving any prospect that can help us get better. I don’t know why you keep referencing rentals. Open your eyes and read.

Tampa didn’t even acquire rentals in their runs. Coleman, Gaudreau and some of the other guys were on two year deals when they were acquired. The only rental they got Savard realistically and Bogosian

What thread are you reading dude? No one said rental? Are you serious? It's what I've been f***ing talking about. Ctrl+f if you don't believe that I've been actively discussing it with other people.

I'm glad that you've been consistent in what you're saying. What you're saying about getting younger players and guys with term actually makes sense, which is a nice change of pace from the rest of this conversation.

On the one hand, I don't want to see the Leafs burn pick and prospects for another waster rental. On the other hand, if we could even have a small chance at Chycrun or a top 6 forward for the Tavares and Nylander line, by god it is tempting.

Sorry, did you end up getting lost? Super rich chirping torontos cap situation considering the mess Holland has made for himself in Edmonton. Take a lap

I like hfboards.
You can say what you want.
:D

Holland has patience, can write contracts, doesnt hestitate.
But he tumble himself over for getting a veteran, and foremost, didnt clean out old goalies like stallock and get a new backup.

Koskinen and Neal was both buyout candidates, while Neal was conpletly finnished, and Koskinen ok as a backup- you dont buyout two players.

Chiarellis ghost is still haunting.

If there is an area where Dubas is best in the class, its burning capspace on already addressed positions. So well see in what creative way he burn it this time.

You on the wrong teams forum bud ?

Friedman said during tonight's broadcast the Leafs have told other teams that they don't plan to use the 5.5 mil cap room. So don't get your hopes up for expensive rentals.

That’s unfortunate. I guess Muzzin isn’t to badly concussed. But obv good for Muzzin. With the league so open to allowing this we need to use every loophole possible. We have a lot of holes to fill.

They gotta use that cap.. keeping Muzzin on LTIR helps everyone. Muzzin gets to fully heal up and we ease him in in the 3rd pairing. Get a stable playoff defenseman and maybe MAF if the price is reasonable. Find another depth playoff grinder to play LW.

Muzzin playing early benefits no one. 1 concussion and coming back is risky, but back to back concussions with his history and he wasn't even playing right before the second one..... Nah you give him as much time as it takes to make sure he won't play hesitant and worn out come playoffs.

i disagree that the leafs shouldn’t go all in. That defense as currently constructed is an atrocity. Could barely hold up agains detroit, Montreal, Columbus….wait until Florida or Tampa come rolling in, if the leafs don’t get a top 4 and maybe even 2, it’ll be another wasted season
