With potentially $5M in new cap space what assets might be outbound?

Or until you are out of assets and have no hope of contending any more.

Thinking we have to trade futures to win now because our window is closing - now that's a defeatist attitude.

No one is saying mortgage the entire future. But you can move assets to upgrade the team. Rentals aren’t the only players available and the great thing is you never run out of assets because every year you get a new set of future picks in upcoming drafts. There’s an endless supply. So you never run out of assets. And you can move guys to recoup assets which the leafs and many other teams have done in the past. So save it lol

you had me until you mention Seth Jarvis Which had nothing to do with spending assets to win. The pick that turned into Seth Jarvis was because we signed a God awful contract in Marleau. And let’s say we had that pick, we would not have Jarvis. If the leafs loved Amirov as much as they did. He would have been their pick at that slot. Jarvis and Amirov were separated by two picks.

I'd argue that by trading that 1st that we were indeed spending assets to win. We were in a rush to clear space to maintain the roster players.

You're right, the pick was pretty much the same and we may have taken Amirov anyways if we kept our own 1st. But the fact is we traded a high 1st round pick to keep roster players that didn't end up helping us. Maybe there is a world out there we could've had both Amirov and Jarvis.

I'm making a bit of a weird argument, but I'm mostly critiquing that we immediately traded yet another 1st round pick to accomplish nothing. We'll see if Amirov comes close to the calibre of player Kapenan is.

I think you will see quite a few moves made now in next few weeks .. I am expecting a top 4 D like Jakob coming inbound .. and a player like Braun for 3rd pair .. we have to shore up a very weak blueline with guys with strength, speed and size for playoff hockey .. I think you will see Sandin, Dermy, our 2023 1st and Mik all gone .. I expect we will keep Lily as he looks to be our best young prospect right now although he won't play in playoffs .. but he will be needed next season ..
Expected playoff D
Rielly Brodie
Jakob Lub
Muzzy Braun
Holl as 7th

I hear you, it sucks to trade and not see results. But being pessimistic isn’t going to help either. We have to keep going back at it to a certain degree. You can’t just quit or give up because it hasn’t worked. I keep referencing Pittsburgh and Tampa but those two did exactly what I’m mentioning and those two teams are similar to the leafs. They are great and finding late round picks and free wallets so I don’t mind them moving assets. I might be in the minority but I do think they are going to win a round this year.

Who fills in on LD if Muzzin is out longer or gets taken out by yet another playoff injury? There's no way you can depend on him being available for 16 wins.

I have nothing against making changes, in fact I've been advocating moving a core piece for a while now. What I do object to is trading for rentals because "now is the time to go for it". We're going for it every year, it's a matter of how we go about it that's the question.

I would be fine moving any prospect depending on the return. Any spare Tom Wilson's around?

I'm fine with moving prospects as well, just please no rentals. Trading for Muzzin for example, I was more than fine with that trade.

Holl can't handle the puck on his strong side, I don't even want to think about him on LD.
Can't argue with that logic .. Sandin, 2023 1st rounder and Mik going for Jakob .. Dermy getting flipped for a 2nd rounder 2022 and a young prospect to help with 2023 cap hit .. it is possible Holl goes to now for a LD defender UFA given LTIR but it will cost us another good prospect like a Robertson

I'd rather be a seller if we're talking rentals.

You guys think we could go after a guy like Hampus Lindholm? I feel like he could really stabilize the backend, and if Muzz comes back for the playoffs, that's a pretty solid top 4, no?

The Leafs have about $6M in capspace, which can quadruple to $24m with double retention.

so, basically, they can add whoever they're willing to pay for.

Any and all picks in 2022 draft plus Kerfoot, Dermott, Holl and Liljegren. Hold onto their top prospects because they’re closer to helping the team than any players drafted 25th in this year’s draft. I would even consider trading Mikheyev to a Western Conference team because they won’t be able to re-sign him and Engval can take his place on the third line.

Heard Ducks are trying to resign him. Klingberg is the more likely of the two.

I prefer we stay away from rentals so Chychrun would be my target.

If you know Muzzin is back for game 1 you put everything on the table

You will never get an opportunity like this again. Go for it

The Boy Wonder and Shinnyhan said the same thing last year and it blew up in their faces. This team has too many flaws and Tampa/Florida in round #1 to "go for it" IMO. If they can't see it, then best to go for one or two solid players with term. No more Rittichs, Folignos, Huttons, Nashes, and Noesens,

With Amirov's health issues, that trade turns from a big win to a big loss. Thanks bringing up the Kappy trade. :(

Players I'm interested in

Chychrun - 4.6M
Fleury - 7M
Crouse - 1.5M
Miller - 5.2M
Manson - 4.1M
Hertl - 5.6M
Braun - 1.8M

Ideally I'd like to add Chychrun + Crouse. It's going to cost us a fortune but they are well worth it. Both are very good players with good size and have control. Crouse a pending RFA, Chychrun on a sweet deal. I would overpay heavily for them, it could be exactly what this team needs. A legitimate top 4 defender, and a good big body winger. 1st + Niemela would probably be where we start, and then add.

A second deal for Fleury if possible, but I don't know if or what assets we'd have left that we're willing to part with. Mrazek would have to go the other way cause of salary and then we add.

Miller is obviously the best player available but it's just not a need for us. We would be a better team today with him, but addressing the blue line and physicality is more important. I think adding those guys would put us over the top and be neck and neck with Tampa/Florida.

Been hearing this same crap for years now starting with "gotta keep JVR as our own rental" and anyone we draft now won't help us for years. Well here we are, years later, have yet to win a round and people are still spewing the same crap despite the team looking as bad as it's looked in the last 5 years or so.

You don't just sit on assets ... win now mode ... pronto ... trade anything and anyone ...

This broken record makes my head hurt.

Your point is a fair one.

It's always iffy to start shedding too many prospects and/or picks. But as a contender you do have to take risks along the way to take the next step. It's just important to take it on the right player rather than a Foligno.

Plus, if things do spiral, you can always liquidate existing assets into young prospects and draft picks.

It's just that right now doesn't seem like a good time to go for it, just too many issues with the team. Whether Campbell gets his shit together and plays well in the playoffs or not is going to impact our chances more than any rentals we pick up. If we can add someone who will be here for a few years then I'm all for it but giving up top prospects and/or 1st rounders for rentals, no thanks.

People act like if don't "go allin" then we're giving up on the season and that's not true. These guys are supposed to be so good, so go ahead and win the cup, what's stopping you?

What's stopping (the Leafs) you?

probably every other team in the playoffs, I would assume. With the current roster the way it is, especially on the defensive side, I would say it's probably worth putting as much resources as you can to give the team a chance to success and not just "go ahead" and try to win the cup as is....
