Speculation: With Copp out for the season and Husso traded. Wings got $14m in cap space. What should Yzerman and co do with it?

Chicago got a whopping 3rd round pick for retaining half of Rantanen's deal.

The market isn't really there anymore.
I guess it will correct itself in a few years when new deals being made reflect the rising cap and teams get in to a crunch again.

Jones retained would be a big move for them. I know how excited everyone is for ASP, but that solidifies the D for several years. They would need to do at least 2.5 and take Holl but then you get into probably a decent return for the Hawks. You split Johansson and Edvinsson playing them on their dominant side pairing them with either Jones and Seider. Edvinsson eventually becomes your third big paid role dman and ASP grows up in an environment where he plays third pairing leverage and PP while improving.

I am intrigued by it for sure even if Jones is not a popular guy on this forum he would allow Detroit to have a pretty significant advantage on the right side in a lot of contests for the rest of the decade.

Now is Jones prepared to have no PP time and the second pairing role? I think it would benefit him and maximize his value. 2nd pairing and first PK guy over the boards would allow for interesting minute distribution.

Probably not - Detroit needs a center if they go after a forward.
Kreider could allow them to move Kasper to the 2C role.

Kreider-Larkin-Ray
Cat-Kasper-Kane

I would still prefer to keep Kasper where he is and get a C though

If a trade doesn't include either a legit top 6 center or top 4 defensemen with term, do nothing IMO.

Come next year if Kasper does show signs he can hold down the 2nd line then I would start trading for rentals.

Brock Nelson for Det. 2025 1st + Max Plante or Carter Mazur.

Nelson pushes Compher down the lineup to play with Tank and Rasmusse.
Debrincat and Kane have a 2C to play with

Wings won’t be paying that price for a rental + a guy that wants a long term deal at his age

I do wonder if Yzerman is waiting for the Columbus games before making any decisions, kinda like when Ottawa beat us back to back a couple years ago.

Granted, we're way more in the playoff hunt this year than we were then, but those are four huge points.

Lol Nelson is 33, Detroit isn’t paying a 1st for a pure rental that has no future. Let alone adding.

Do not need to do anything with that cap space. Historically bubble teams have wisely stayed away from big acquisitions. They either stay pat, or grab something from the bargain bin (4th-5th round pick territory). Do not expect DRW to buck the trend.
