Speculation: With Copp out for the season and Husso traded. Wings got $14m in cap space. What should Yzerman and co do with it?

As long as he does something this time around. Still furious he didn’t do a single thing last deadline, even if it’s not a big splash.

To Det
LD/RD Connor Murphy (50% retained)
Ryan Danato (39 points this season)

To Chi
Justin Holl
Det 1st

Both players would probably happy to extend in Det.

Detroit doesn’t need retention help, they have plenty of cap this year and next. Donato would be a pure rental as the Wings don’t need another 3C. Connor Murphy would be fine as our 3RD for this year and next (depending on whether ASP is NHL ready or needs a year in the AHL). But being 33 at the end of his contract, he wouldn’t be re-signed either. So a first for essentially a couple low end rentals is a bit to steep. Remove the retention from Chicago, change the 1st to a 2nd and we can even throw in a B prospect.

They have a deep prospect pool, a lot of cap space and all their draft picks, If SY doesn’t do anything It will be looked at as a failure. Larkin and the boys deserve a boost.

ideal world- Rantanen, Byram, Boeser, or maybe even EP40 - someone who’s young enough to be a core player not a pure rental

Likely scenario - smaller upgrades a guy like Justin Faulk, Luke schenn, McCann, Matheson

I think McCann would be a great fit. Compher moves into Copps role for the season. Kasper stays on the top line. Not a huge cap hit and signed past this season, so not a rental. Has one of the best shots in the league.

I actually think a center like Mccann is a pretty solid upgrade in Detroit. It wouldn't be a crazy blockbuster but he's a legit offensive, second line center to play with Cat and Kane. You allow Compher to settle in as your 3C where he's actually a really good option then you have several options at 4th line center. Detroit would actually be pretty solid down the middle

How much C has McCann played recently? And how good is he at playing it or is he better on the wing? If he can legit play C I think he may be the perfect fit for Detroit

what do people think adding to a team with one championship level dman and center plus 2 wingers going to do besides weaken draft position ? ide rather get paid draft pix for taking on a couple bad expiring contracts to deepen the prospect pool . while not making additions also improves draft position . windows not open yet

So you have watched the team completely turn their season around with a mid season coaching change, get themselves into a wild card spot while having I believe the 2nd best record in the league during that time and you want to start tanking for draft positioning? Getting our young players some playoff games is way more important than 5-6 draft spots.
