Leggs is still one of the worst in the league. Missed the most point after attempts. 2nd lowest field goal percentage in the league. And the Bombers attempted fewer long field goals than most if not all other teams due to Leggs' suspect accuracy and weak leg. Oh and while I'm at it, he is mediocre at kickoffs too.
Please Walters bring in a legit challenger for kicking and/or punting duties. Not some loser like Mourtado where it will be preordained in camp that Leggs will keep his position.
I'm glad we had Castillo to make those critical point after attempts and field goals in windy Tim Hortons field back in 2021. Who here actually thinks Legs make all those critical kicks to help us win the Grey Cup...anyone?
I mean I'm not here to blindly defend Liegghio, he clearly has alot of work to do to have a long CFL career (at least as a kicker) but at least be accurate with your facts here.
1. Missed the most point after attempts
Also attempted the most...His percentage was 91.1%. Which fair ranked him 8th of 10 ahead of Castillo and Domagala. But within 1 percentage point of Lauther, Bede, and Ward. So no real difference there, about middle of the pack here.
2. 2nd lowest field goal percentage in the league.
Just objectively wrong. He ranked 7th of 10. For sure needs improvement, but not this terribly drastically, one more made kick would have put him past...Sergio Castillo.
3. And the Bombers attempted fewer long field goals than most if not all other teams due to Leggs' suspect accuracy and weak leg
Numbers for this are hard to find. But hey only 3 kickers in the league had a longer field goal than Liegghio last year. Small, Lauther and Bede. Notably 2 of those 3 finished below Liegghio in FG%. This is 100% one of those things that fans of their own team notices alot more than you notice of other teams. I bet Derek Taylor has some good stats on this, I should inquire...
4. Oh and while I'm at it, he is mediocre at kickoffs too
A problem I was thinking as well. However the numbers don't bear this out. Of kickers that regularly took kickoffs (as in more than 10 kickoffs last year) he ranked 5th out of 10 with a 63.9 yard average. Not really that bad.
No one is saying he was some kind of superstar kicker last year. He was solidly below average. But considering his age, pedigree and signs of improvement it's premature to completely give up on him. Whyte (37), Parades (37), Castillo (32), Lauther (32), Liegghio (25), Small (23), Bede (33), Ward (30), and Cote (26) were the ages of the kickers in the league last year. There's every expectation that there is still alot of room for growth in Liegghio's game.
Liegghio is an all-star level punter though. He'll retain those duties no matter what. He has great ball placement on his punts and he doesn't really sacrifice distance for it with a ranking of 5th out of 9 in average distance on punts.
