Bombers add 5.

Google is coming up mostly empty on the QB. I would think it's this guy who was undrafted in 2022 out of somewhere called Reinhardt University.
2022 NFL Draft Prospect Interview: Billy Hall, QB, Reinhardt University
Billy Hall
Very much looks like a rush first QB, so I'm guessing this might be their new Streveler/Prukop short yardage guy (or at least one of the bodies in competing for that spot). Rushed for 678 yards (56.5yards/game) in 2021-22, but completed just 54% of his passes for 1670 yards in his final year. Good TD to INT ratio though at 20 to 9. 20 passing TDS on just 108 completions is crazy though haha. Added 5 rushing TDs.

Bombers signed an American kicker. Dude went 20-for-21 on field goals and hit all 57 of his extra points as a senior in college in 2021. He wasn’t drafted to the NFL but spent last season working out for several NFL teams.

He’s an American, but seems like solid competition for Liegghio.

Edit: Name’s Chandler Stanton: Bombers sign all-American kicker to set up competition with Liegghio in training camp

Gonna be real tough to find room for a DI Kicker. I think the draft will actually tell us a bit of Bombers thoughts here. We target a DB in RD1, and ST specialist (notably LB/S) in rounds 2/3, I think that's them trying to fill backup american gaps on the roster and give them roster flexibility for an American kicker.

I’m just glad they’re bringing in competition for Leggs.

I wonder if we don’t just go BPA in the draft though?

How so? I see NIs at rb, 2 x rec, 3 ol, 1-2 DL, DB

Id prob look at DL in round 1 then ST

Id legit look at trading up to get uguak

Bombers have over the past 4 years been pretty consistent in their DI usage.
1 - KR - Usually Grant, but always have a backup WR and KR.
2 - DL - Whether this is DE or DT, they've kept an extra American DL on the roster.
3 - ST LB - Each game for since 2019 they've dressed an American as the #4/5 LB on the roster.
4 - Extra DB/K - they had Medlock, then Castillo. Then last year they used an extra DB. Losing Ford to NFL means they'll desperately want to keep this as a DB spot.

While I agree DL is the biggest need, if they feel this new American K has a chance to dethrone Liegghio, I think they'll go DB to replace Ford and give them more roster flexibility. And target some ST LBs early to give them more options as well to potentially eliminate that #3 spot, but they have seemed reluctant to do that.

Personally I go DL, let the best kicker in camp win the job and potentially eliminate the ST LB spot if you need an American spot, but they've been really consistent on wanting that spot to bolster the teams and I don't have any reason to think their mentality has changed.

I wonder if we don’t just go BPA in the draft though?

BPA in football doesn't really exist in the same way as hockey though. Outside of being far more specialized than hockey it's cause you are, for the most part, drafting players that are stepping right into your roster. So you have to make sure there's a spot now v 2-5 years from now like hockey. It tends to matter less in later rounds since they aren't necessarily going to crack the roster, but your top 2-4 rounds they'll be looking for players who they can see on the roster year 1, outside of the odd "futures" pick cause of odd CFL/Usports rules (1 year) and the NFL threats (unknown timelines means often drafting these round 4 or later).

So all the NFL mock draft podcasts that I’ve been listening to that say Dallas should go BPA are wrong?!?! o_O

Just kidding, I definitely get what you’re talking about. Especially in the CFL it’s a fine-balance between taking the best player, and taking the best player who isn’t an NFL risk.

To poo on my BPA comment, I’d look at DB or DL too. I know some mocks have us taking another OL in the 1st though.

Anyway, will depend how the draft falls. I know about as much about this draft as Abraham Lincoln knows about the Internet.

If Stanton wins the kicker job, do they completely drop Liegghio? I’d like to keep him as punter, but I don’t know if the Bombers would keep an American kicker and not have them do both.

Don’t forget about the Globals. They function as Nationals on game day. Already have Hansen, Maruo, the only really good looking non kickers in this upcoming Global draft are interior DL. The Canadian draft is top heavy in rush end types too. There’s two DB’s that look like immediate players but I doubt they drop to 8.

The Bombers never really replaced Kongbo last year which was magnified when Hansen went out. I expect a couple of the rush ends to be very near the top of their draft list.

They’ll find a way to have an American kicker if it’s the best option. Can’t go forward with a placekicker lacking confidence in the big moments. Liegghio’s punting in the Grey Cup pissed off the Trinity as well, although he had a great season punting overall. Walters has said in every interview he’s done this off-season that they will likely draft an Aussie punter again to compete.

I have admitted this before, I follow basically 0 NCAA and Usports football. All I know about the draft is what I read and hear in advance of it.

But I have heard is a very weak OL class, and a very strong DL class. Now some of that might be lost to NFL even beyond the top 5 which are all almost assuredly gone to NFL, there's another few generating interest. But despite that the top of the draft this year figures to be DL heavy.

Liegghio or a Global will be punting, IMO.

Mike O'Shea proud of son's CFL draft eligibility but believes him joining Blue Bombers wouldn't be 'fair' - 3DownNation

Apparently O'Shea's son is draft eligible this year. Not expected to be drafted though. Gotta think if he doesn't get an opportunity anywhere else he'll be in Winnipeg on the PR at least haha. But ideally I think they want him to sign elsewhere to avoid the conflict of interest.
Meh non issue either way. OSH strikes me as the kinda guy who says “if my son is good enough to play for the Blue Bombers we will sign him, if not we will not pursue him.”

The Lowry issue with the Jets seemed to be non existent and is barely worth comparing to the O’Sheas. Roster size, player career point, etc… make it hardly worth comparing to.

His career path and numbers seem more like a guy who'll attend a CFL camp or two never really sticking. Theres dozens of those types every year coming out. Bombers had a Rifles WR on and off the PR as an emergency guy last year (I believe his name was Luke McMillan) that's the type of player it seems like O'Shea's kid is, barely on the radar.

Wouldn't surprise me to see him emerge as a coach/scout in 3-5 years to be honest. But hey I've been massively wrong before and will be again. Who knows.

At the same time would anyone be surprised if the Argos ”take a flyer“ on him?

No real news. I'm just getting excited about Bombers Season starting soon.

One new thing is 3downnation has begun their now annual lists of highest paid players by positions. No surprise Collaros is #1 highest paid QB (therefore player). But the latest one shows that Bombers have Brady Oliveira signed at a huge discount. He's 7th highest paid RB in the league. Considering production that's a good rate, when you include his passport it's a flat out steal.
The CFL's 15 highest-paid running backs and fullbacks for the 2023 season - 3DownNation

Also Im changing the thread title cause i want to.

The CFL's 20 highest-paid receivers for the 2023 season - 3DownNation

Only 2 Bombers among top 20 highest paid WRs. Lawler #2, Demski #9 (#2 among Canadian WRs). Tough decision on Schoen will be coming after this season, doubt they'll be able to afford Lawler, Schoen, and Demski in 2024. Note Demski and Lawler are already signed for 2024.

Salary Management System: Four teams exceed the cap in 2022 - CFL.ca

Bombers got a 65k fine for going over the salary cap. It's not explicit but I think they a fined dollar for dollar for every dollar over the cap up to 100k over. After 100k over is when draft pick penalties and steeper fines start to take place.

Largest in the league but 3 other teams also exceeded the cap. It's not unusual in CFL.
