It should be onside, but way back into the days of Shanahan playing for the Wings, refs typically call that offside. That was a pretty progressive call from these refs. I'd say more than half the league's refs call that back. Its usually called very strictly.
Still, calling the game that way should be the way offsides its called. More zone entries, the better.
The challenge could have gone either way depending on how you want to interpret what control of the puck means. I think the fact that Marchand easily maintained control of the puck instead of losing it after he crossed the line made the difference here.
