Re-watched To Live and Die in L.A. last night, which I'm always kinda tempted to argue is his best movie (it's not, that would be The Exorcist). But it's certainly my favorite movie of his.

A genuine character too.

Some memorable films, he felt that the best one he ever made was Sorcerer. He was asked to direct Born on the Fourth of July back in the 1970`s which would have starred Al Pacino but believe it was decided that it wasn`t the time for another Vietnam war film.

Sad to hear the news.

Somewhere on Uranus
when he was on his game he was one of the best. IN the 70's he has streak of classic movies(some remembered more than others)

1970 The Boys in the band
1971 The French Connection
1973 The Exorcist
1975 A Conversation with Fritz Lang (great doc with one of the greatest directors of all time)
1977 Sorcerer

then he became a hit and miss director. Killer Joe was his last really good movie in 2011--showed the the Matthew McConaughy could act

Wow i didnt know that about Born on the 4th - in a way, I am glad he didnt take it on. I LOVE that movie, and I am not a big Tom Cruise fan but I think he was excellent in it.

Exorcist still scares me to this day. I have probably seen it well over a dozen times since the late 70s but I still make it a point to watch it every few years. And I purposely watch it at night, in the dark, scaring myself like an idiot haha. Same with Carrie. I love horror, and watch many many horror films but those are the only two that still scare me. (Carrie, just the mom really scares me) (Even though she is/was a babe in real life - she is terrifying as a crazed religious woman)

The French Connection is one of my all-time favorite films. One of those I will always make time for if it's on television or will even rent from time to time. He obviously had some other critical faves but overall was one of those directors whose star shone brightly for a relatively short period of time.
