It seems there is a ton of speculation already about players.

The expansion draft obviously has teams scrambling.

Could we be on the verge of one of the busiest trade seasons ever?

At the end of the day there is always more bark then bite when it comes to the trade deadline. I don't see how this year will be any different.

Solid contribution, really, thanks so much.

I remember the great expansions of 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015...

He's not wrong...

Every year the same thread gets created and every year goes the exact same way.

If anything the expansion draft will severely limit the amount of trades that are made. Teams cant afford to take on an extra player and be forced to expose another quality player because of it.

You might see a little more action in June, but throughout the season it should be much slower due to the expansion draft.

My god. Same dumb hype every year. ****

I am not sure who will make the most moves to protect themselves or take advantage of expansion but I could see Montreal trying to load up this year for a good run. If I were them I would be in win at all costs mode until Price retires.

Off season? I hope we are a Team that takes advantage of the D that will have to be exposed and maybe spend some of our smurfy wingers for one.

You are both wrong, teams will make moves to cover themselves, Look at Pittsburgh's goalie problem. There are teams with too many good D. To suggest that this is a typical season in that regard is short sighted to say the least.

I was thinking more along the lines of "We can only protect 3 defenseman, better trade our 4th defenseman or 8th forward this for picks/prospects then risk losing via expansion for nothing"

Losing your 6th forward is almost a logical impossibility.

Think about it a little bit...

6th best forward.

I believe it's 5 forwards, 3D, and 1 goalie right? I may be forgetting the format. Or is it 6 forwards?

Either way you're likely to potentially lose a good player via expansion and the idea behind trading it may be just to get something back rather then lose via expansion, that's all.

This made me laugh... I read it immediately in the voice of an old wise man telling the tales of the long ago in the before times and it made me chuckle haha.

But to answer the question I actually think the expansion kills the trades because everyone is going to be focusing on what they can keep and worried about trading a high price for a playoff run then losing someone because it later in the expansion.

7 forwards + 3 dmen or 8 players...

Edited for accuracy then.

Most rentals expire right?

Some teams might look at guys with a year on top of that if the price is right enough and they feel that player is the last piece of the puzzle. I mean guys like JVR and Hartnell have been mentioned the past 2 years as deadline deals.

Leafs should be involved with a few trades to say the Least.

Have an influx of picks and prospects as trade currency plus guys like JVR too. They'll also be pretty unaffected by expansion so they should definite be buyers.

Where are all the spare protection slots supposed to be? I know people are going bananas with the "Can't lose player x for nothing," but I don't see where the demand is going to meet the supply. When we start taking out the 8 player teams, there just aren't enough slots.

I think these moves are more likely to occur shortly before the expansion draft.

We'll see the same trade deadline we always see, where expiring UFAs are traded around for picks

Some teams still have room, and players they aren't too concerned about losing.

And some teams are at risk of losing a really good player (MIN).

Seems to me there's a lot of good potential there.

nope. player movement will not happen.

players will not be sold off for cheap because of the threat of expansion. infact the opposite will occur.

why would a team choose to lose 2 good players instead of only one.
trading a player away still means they will lose one.
