Will the NHL ever have another Chris Chelios?

As many fans do--I enjoy looking at modern players and comparing them to previous era players and all-time greats. When I look at some of the elite, young defensemen we have today, I can see "stylistic comparisons" to guys like Leetch, Bourque, Lidstrom, Coffey, Housley, etc. But, will we ever see another Chris Chelios?

When looking at Chelios--he was such a rare bird--and not just in his style of play. He was a late bloomer who gave up hockey before college. While sitting on the beach with a friend, he ended up being recruited to leave San Diego to try out for a team in Moose Jaw. He was asked to play defense (instead of forward) and he blossomed. But this was a kid who came to terms with never pursuing hockey as a career.

After Moose Jaw he ended up representing Team USA and ultimately being drafted in the 2nd round (40th overall) by the Montreal Canadiens.

When you look at Cheli's NHL career, it gets even more impressive. He won 3 Norris Trophies and 3 Stanley Cups. He scored just under 1,000 points and racked up close to 3,000 career PIM. By all accounts, he was considered the best teammate by multiple ex-teammates, and he was considered the greatest competitor ever by at least two coaches during his career.

He was the ultimate leader--beloved by his teammates--and feared on the ice. He was considered the Godfather of USA Hockey. Not only was he physical, he was an absolute madman at times. He was brilliant in his own end and was elite offensively. He could pass and fire well-placed slappers from the point. He could kill penalties, log 30 minutes a night if needed, and QB the top PP unit.

And, of course, he played FOREVER.

Do we ever get to see someone like Chelios ever again?

Yeah, Pronger was kinda Chelios-like. Maybe Pronger was better defensively and positionally, but Chelios was a better skater and was more dynamic offensively.

I was starting middle school when Chelios was a rookie and finishing university when Pronger was a rookie. I was a defensenan in youth hockey. Robinson, Langway, Coffey, Bourque were my heroes.

I have always thought Pronger better than Chelios at stopping rushes against, better at clearing creases, better at winning battles along the boards, better at first passes out of the defensive zone and better at shots from the point, especially on the pp.

I have also thought Chelios better than Pronger at skating fast, better at transitional rushes, positionally taking away the passer on odd-man rushes against, better at shot blocking, better at agitating the opposition into taking penalties (especially his years in Chicago) and better at avoiding checks.

Both were masters at taking penalties at opportune times (yes, PIMs is a plus in some situations; one shouldn't tally penalties as in itself a negative - if you do, you never had a competitive hockey coach when//if you played).

I'm sorry, you're asking if another exact clone of Chris Chelios will come along?

All things considered--his unorthodox method of making it to the NHL, his accomplishments, style of play, leadership, longevity, meanness, etc. I mean, could you imagine what would happen if a player today did this...

Is this suppose to be some sort of positive endorsement for the man? Threatening someone and their family?

I think his former teammate (and one of my favs) Gary Suter was a closer clone than Pronger.
He was a little more offensive, and a little less gritty, but pretty comparable.

Suter had a great career for a 9th rnder

Mark Giordano perhaps? Not at a Hall of Fame level of a Chelios, but came out of nowhere to etch out a very long and productive NHL career. Has a Norris Trophy and flashed some seasons of offensive brilliance. Great defensively, plays a physical, brand of hockey, somewhat dirty, has that ability to be a real field marshal out there.

I like the pronger comparison in the sense that both were among the best dmen of their time, but they were also the edgiest, and downright dirty.

I've seen plenty of dmen come and go who have that nasty edge, but very few who marry that with a norris caliber package like pronger and Chelios did.

Bieksa kind of reminded me of that Chelios edge, but he wasn't in the same league.

Pronger overlapped Chelios and was a high, 1st round pick who came up through the ranks.

Then the answer is an obvious no right as each player and their journey is unique to them and the time frame they played in.

I mean we might see a player fill 6 or 7 boxes out of 10 on any imaginary checklist and the ones not marked make it an obvious no this guy isn't like Chelios was.

No...no...

I think Pronger gets seriously overrated on these boards. Last defenseman to win the hart trophy, I get it. But he didn't deserve it when compared to others that year. That should have been another Jagr or Hasek win. The only thing Pronger has on prime Chelios is reach and shot power. 90's Chelios would have kicked Pronger's ass in a fight, then led a rush up ice after getting out of the penalty box to set up the game winning goal. The dude was a beast.

Anyway, Chris Chelios positionally from the mid 1980s till around 2004 was almost as good as Lidstrom. He just always seemed to be where the other team's forward was or where the play would end up. Even when he lost the wheels he was still one of the smartest defensemen in the league and earned a 2nd place Norris nomination in 2002.
