Is the ref cam even because of ESPN? It is certainly part of the "world feed" because also Sportsnet shows it, so at least it is not some ESPN exclusive thing. Somehow I think they would be testing this even if games were on NBC. I don't expect to see the ref cam in every regular season game.

I only watched some minutes of pre-tournament games on ESPN and it was brutal and instantly made me miss NBC, that say s a lot. Have they at least found the rink audio volume slider by now?

I honestly got sort of burned out on hockey last year between coaching, playing, and watching. I watched a few games at the end of the season, but I didn't see any with ref cam. It seems ESPN is utilizing it more.

I will admit that since starting this thread I've noticed some of the issues with the intermission show mentioned in the thread. I'm still enjoying having hockey on ESPN though.

iirc Winter Classic or Stadium Series had ref cam last season, but my point was that this (and the other things, digital board ads) NHL is now testing/piloting may not be directly related to ESPN at all and neither it is necessarily related to NBC's reluctance.

The best case scenario is for ESPN and NBC to both cover the NHL. If the other three major North American sports leagues can be split up over different networks, I don't see why the NHL can't also.

Im sorry but ESPN BLOWSSSSS.

Linda Cohen should never be allowed to be on TV like EVER. She is Terrible, it honestly comes across as if she has never watched NHL level hockey or something and I know that isn't the case. Her on air work in the studio with Hull and Chelios is just bad. The guy doing the play by play is annoying as hell and he is an ESPN regular

Of all of the folks I have caught only Chelios seems to have any ability to do the job.

The biggest issue with NBC is the people, not the broadcast itself.

Get rid of Milbury yesterday. He's a cancer. There's not a single viewer that will find anything redeeming in anything he says.

I listened to Linda Cohen on Puck Soup (Greg Wyshinski's show). She knew some stuff about hockey, but she has some crazy opinions though. She said Quick is the best goalie in the NHL.

That's not crazy. It's not necessarily right, but I've certainly heard dumber things said on TV.

I love the espn coverage. Weekes and Buccigross are enjoyable to listen to, no Milbury, and the ref cam is good.

I don't know if NBC will learn anything but I have learned that I really like Melrose doing color. He is funny and makes the games more fun for me to watch.

He also seems to get that we are watching a sporting event and not the nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran.

First time in forever I haven't switched over to SN/CBC coverage of a hockey game.

Linda Cohn played hockey as a goaltender up through college and is a fan of the Rangers. Though anyone is free to disagree with her, I don't think that she should be questioned on her knowledge of the sport or opinions on goaltenders (again, her position). She's probably played more hockey than many, if not most, of the big names that cover the sport. We don't give guys like John Buccigross and Bob McKenzie a hard time. Heck, Bob Miller is in the HHOF and he never played. The fact that someone like Cohn doesn't regularly cover hockey doesn't mean that she doesn't know it.

Regarding something completely different, though I praised ESPN earlier for their coverage, there's one thing that's been really annoying me these last few days. Most of the times when they've gone to the studio at the end of periods or, other times, when they should be talking about the game at hand first, they talk about USA vs. Canada, instead. There have been thrilling periods between other teams and the first thing that they discuss in the intermission is USA/CAN. Then, they go to commercial break and come back before they discuss the period that we just saw. It's aggravating because they're there to discuss the current game primarily and other matchups secondarily and it feels like they're treating viewers as though all that we care about is our own country and we're watching other teams only to get context and commentary on what we really care about. They should totally advertise and discuss the huge upcoming game, but do so in the second segment, after they've discussed the game at hand, not first.

I would take Milbury of listening to Melrose.... Melrose sounds like he has a mouth full of good all the time........

It's night and day better than nbcsn. I can't stand Doc, Millbury and Pierre. Biased and annoying. I miss the days of ESPN broadcasting the games.

I agree with this. ESPN's hockey coverage was never bad, it was just that it became much too scarce in it's final seasons. I mean they even did away with NHL2Nite and were showing less and less games as the years went by. Had the NHL resigned with ESPN they would've been regulated to ESPN2. As for this tournament, well they need some polish considering how many players they've screwed up both on the ice and their promo shots.

I think NBCSN is doing better as they go on with showing all playoff games on their NBC/USA channels, but need to clean up the look and sound.

I do think they need a change in personnel. Every time I watch a game on NBCSN, Ill change to NHL Network after the game to listen to their analysis. I prefer those guys. Weekes is very good, so is Mears and even Rupp.

I think the ESPN play-by-play guys leave a lot to be desired--listening to Levy made me strangely feel like I was listening to the sh i t show that is the MN Wild broadcaster. Buccigross sounds like a college kid yakking around trying to sound like "cool". I think Olczyk is better than Melrose and Pierre and Pang are a wash. The level of professionalism just seems to be lacking in the ESPN broadcast.

After some of the games ESPN didn't even do a post-game show--they went directly to an 8th network hour for the week of college football preview

Love the ref cam, and love ESPN's bump graphics. NBC's stuff is pretty bland.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I really don't mind Levy or Buccigross at all. Its a nice change of pace. You also have to realize these dudes barely get to cover hockey at ESPN, if they got to spend more time covering more games, they would be much more smooth and I'm sure knowledgeable

ESPN is terrible. Melrose commentating is laughable. NBC is way better. Only one I don't care for on NBC is jonesy because he's a cookie cutter. If Hull replaced him that'd be great then they'd have Millbury, Roenick and Hull. That'd be awesomely awkward.

ESPN has done a pretty good job. I like the camera work. I also like that they do a better job on replays and showing penalties than NBC. Its annoying how many times NBC never even bothers showing replays of penalties because they are too obsessed with cutting to a commercial, then upon returning don't take the time to show a replay. I also like Hull a lot. He and Chelios are infinitely better than that dumbass predictable Milbury and Jones (who isn't really all that bad but is too vanilla). I think it would be cool if ESPN could get in on the action and split games with NBC at some point in the future.
