Career NYR. His game will age like fine wine. He’ll be scoring 30-40 the next few years. Has turned into the face of the Rangers. Home grown, getting even better AFTER signing an extension.

He needs to be the captain. He’s got that.

Or am I ahead of myself here but does Kreider deserve it after scoring 30?

Sosososo proud of Chris. Really am. Went from a good player to being an all-time Ranger.

If he maintains his play and finished out his career with the rangers he absolutely will.

Before this season everyone was saying his game would age like milk lol, and he was considered a very inconsistent player who never lived up to his potential. Most Ranger fans thought his contract would become an albatross and many wanted him moved entirely.

I’d have to see a couple more seasons like this one before I’d consider it. I’d be surprised if he hit 50 again, if he did, and we win a cup with him then I think he probably deserves it. At the very least he should have a couple more 40+ seasons along with a cup to be in that conversation imo

If he wins the cup especially this year how will he be different than Graves?

It won't be. If they win the Cup, he's going to have a major part in it and that's going to push him over the top.

Kreider is currently 11th all time in goals for the Rangers at 227. 3 is Graves at 280. To pass him, he'd need 53 more which he realistically should hit within 2 more full seasons. 1 through 5 currently is Gilbert, Ratelle, Graves, Bathgate, and Hadfield, all of whom have their numbers retired. If you want to go further, Messier is at 7 and Leetch at 9 who are also retired.

I think a Cup 100% locks it down but when all is said and done, he'll have a very strong case regardless especially if he plays out his entire contract here which could see him potentially push for Ratelle at #2 with 336.

The bar is Graves and Hadfield, I guess.
The real hot take in this thread is that neither of these players should have had their jerseys retired, but should have been in a 'Ring of Honor' type deal, but since NYR don't have that...

And no, I am not fielding questions.

Only reason Hadfield got it was because #11 was already retired for Mess.

If the Rangers win a Cup in his tenure, then I think that makes it a whole lot more likely, but as it stands now, not close enough as many have pointed out.

While he's moving up the franchise charts (needs one more goal to tie original Ranger Bill Cook for 10th all time in Goal Scoring) and now holds franchise records for single season records for PP Goals - 25, Game Winners - 10 and possibly also beating Jagr's 54 goals, I think he has to be part of something bigger to cement his legacy.

His 50 goals this season does stand out from his previous years, though he probably would have come close to, or broken 30 goals in each of his previous two seasons if they had been normal ones, and as such it feels a little exaggerated, but clearly his consistency this year has been so much better.

If he doesn't win a Cup, but he plays out his contract, then he could become just the 4th Ranger to reach 1000 games with the team, he could well be the playoff game leader at that point (passing Henrik Lundqvist) and could well move into second all time in goals (think the 406 from Rod Gilbert, which is 179 more than he has now is too far).

That might be enough, because the guys around him would all have had their numbers retired.

Of course that assumes that Kreider stays healthy and productive into his early and mid thirties....soooo, I guess we'll see

If he has a few more productive seasons (I would doubt that he reaches these heights again), reaches almost 1000 games, I would say, absolutely (ABSOLUTELY) yes.

He has already has had as good a Ranger career as Hadfield (I was there the night he reached 50) and almost as good as Graves.

Why do so many continue to undervalue what CK has meant to this team? Beats me. He is this generations Mr. Ranger (so many forget that during his time in the NHL, Gilbert, one of my favorite players, was also somewhat of an underachiever). If the boards had existed way back then, RG would have come in for his share of criticism.

So, given the parameters for multiple more productive seasons, yes, yes, yes.

With 5 more years to go, here's where Kreider currently ranks:

GP: 21st
G: 11th
P: 15th
PPG: 5th
GWG: 9th

If we assume he hits 24 goals, 45 points, 5 PP goals, 3 GWGs per season, here's where he would rank at the end of his contract with a 15-year tenure:

GP: 4th with 1047 (Behind Howell, Leetch, Gilbert)
G: 2nd with 347 (Gilbert)
P: 3rd with 642 (Gilbert, Ratelle)
PPG: 2nd with 108 (Henry)
GWG: 2nd with 48 (Gilbert)

He would be the highest ranked player in every category without his number in the rafters with the exception of Camille Henry for PP goals.

Cup or not, if Kreider plays out his contract with the Rangers, his number goes up.

The Rangers deviated from their norm by retiring Graves. But once they opened that door, Hadfield made sense.

No- he had so many years where he went completely invisible for many games. Absolutely not a retired number level player even as he’s having a career year.

Unfortunately, he probably will given the lowered standards. But he shouldn't. Unless he continues to score at thsi pace for several years and wins a cup.

Ridiculous that Graves & Hadfield were retired. I also don't love the backdating crap they did despite those guys probably deserving it. Retired numbers should be incredibly rare and special. The last thing we need is to become like the Yankees.

Highly unlikely unless he brings a cup here. Graves probably shouldn't be up there, but winning a cup buys you a discount on getting your number up there. Kreider is 15th in all time NYR points. Graves has 90 more points in 127 more games.

Not crazy to say he would get retired if he brings a cup here given our standard.

obligatory Bill Cook was shafted comment

As much as I am a Kreider fan, don’t see it happening unless he wins a cup with the Rangers, and retires a Ranger then I think it should happen. But those are two tall orders, not impossible but not easy to do.

Why on earth would Chris Kreider's number be retired?

You're an original six franchise, try to have some kind of standards.
