François Gagnon on RDS wrote a story about last night game featuring Patrick Chèvrefils, who was the emergency backup goalie for the Canadiens after Montembeault got hurt. However, it says that Chèvrefils was not at the Bell Centre, but at home on the South Shore of Montréal, during the game. He received a call and hurried to the arena.

I find this very surprising. It says the Capitals didnt had need for an EBUG because they had an AHL goalie nearby in case of an injury (which happened to Thompson). But the Canadiens didnt had Primeau or any goalie under contract at the Bell Centre.

He got there in probably what, 20 minutes max. But he also needed a good 10 minutes to get inside the building and get dress. That's 30 minutes leaving the Canadiens ... utterly exposed? What if Dobes gort hurt?

That's not a pre season game, it's a playoff game. I find this very surprising.

Sounds like incompetence from the Montreal front office. Here is what real playoff teams do.

You always have a 3rd string goalie on the roster for playoffs so you don't need a EBUG.

A goalie under professional contract that would not be allowed to play if both Dallas goalies got injured helps in what way? Maybe read the rules first. There's a reason it's always random guys stepping in as EBUGs, you're not allowed to designate a professional goalie as one.

What is the rule that you can't use someone under contract for an EBUG? The OP literally just said Washington had their own.

The reason it is usually some random is because NHL teams don't want to carry around 3 goalies all year for the 0.01% chance they will need an EBUG for a regular season game. Playoff implications are different.

Yesterday was a very unique situation in the sense that the EBUG who showed up in a Habs jerseys could've ended up wearing a Caps jersey if Lindgren got hurt as well. Now that would've been something.

Playoff rules are different I believe. The bullet points listed earlier apply to the regular season only.

In the playoffs, I'm pretty sure you're allowed to have a third (or fourth, or fifth, etc. if you really feel like it) who's permitted to come into the game if your regular two dressed goaltenders go down with an injury. I believe Montreal chose not to do that because the chances of it happening are really low and their AHL team is in the playoffs, but I'm not actually sure about that last one (their AHL team being in the playoffs that is).

Imagine if an EBUG had to come into a game 7 in the SCF or something. What would be going through his head? If he somehow got the win he would be a city legend

I don't think those rules are legit, they are just bullet points from ESPN which is a terrible source. Even if they are correct.. Montreal front office still f***ed up when you read point #1 right???

The NHL rulebook is extremely weird. If you take it by the book, the #3 goalie should be a skater that would take the net if both goalies get hurt.

Section 2 rules 5.3 of the 24-25 rules reads as follow

"Except when both goalkeepers are incapacitated, no skater on the
playing roster in the game shall be permitted to wear the equipment of
the goalkeeper.
In regular League and Playoff games, if both listed goalkeepers
are incapacitated, that team shall be entitled to dress and play any
goalkeeper who is eligible."

Then section 2 5.1 describes who is eligible

"Eligible Players - A team shall be composed of twenty (20) players
(eighteen (18) skaters and two (2) goalkeepers) who shall be under
contract to the Club they represent. For the purposes of these playing
rules, any reference to “player” shall refer to both skaters and
goalkeepers. Any reference to “goalkeeper” shall mean that the
section of the rule is specific to goalkeepers."

EBUGs technically aren't even legal by the book.

But then there's the CBA.

Article 16.13, goaltender exemption which allows a recall to replace an injured goalie which I guess would fit here for Clay. I stand corrected. The contract rules are if you are to sign a PTO(Like if chevrefils was to dress), that player isn't allowed to have a professional contract.

Dallas called up their 5th stringer who was playing in the ECHL. Montreal front office forgot what happens during the playoffs it's been so long since they were there.
