So if you've been watching Hockey lately, its evident that Jack Campbell has been playing like a Beast for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Hes setting record breaking numbers and hes expected to replace a Frederick Andersen as the Starting Netminder. But this success in the NHL for Campbell should have been reached a long time ago and I am about to explain why.
In 2010, Campbell was drafted 11th Overall by the Dallas Stars! Being drafted that high as a goalie on its own is a pretty significant accomplishment. When he made his first few stints in the Stars AHL Affilate Team the Texas Stars he was making a name for himself putting up solid numbers in his first few seasons. But it would be the 2013-14 season where we would see the breakout for Jack Campbell! Campbell would post a 12-2-2 record With a 1.49 GAA holding a .942%. You would think those stats would Gaurantee a roster spot, but no. The Stars GM at the time Jim Nill just didn't see anything in Campbell and didn't wanna give him a chance as he would play only 1 game with the Dallas Stars before making a few trips to the AHL and ECHL and then being shipped off to the LA Kings. This would be Campbells chance to break out as he would post decent numbers with Ontario Reign that would earn him a Backup spot for Johnathon Quick. Jack Campbell would quickly make a name for himself as the Kings Backup Netminder posting a .924% In his first season and a .928% in his next season as A BACKUP! With these stats Kyle Dubas saw something in Campbell as he would trade for him on February 20th 2020. And as we all know, Jack Campbell is finally heading into his prime 7 Years late.
So from what we've learned from this story is if GMs actually Gave Campbell a chance and saw the 11th Overall Potential he had in him, I think he would have been a solid goaltender years ago, but as Leafs fan, thank you Jim Nill!
