One thing that's kept them competitive is not having to make big trades to fill in their roster. Trading guys as they look unlikely to sign has helped them fill in their roster with quality depth.
Losing Trouba was a tough pill a couple years back, but getting Pionk was a built-in top-4 replacement. I do think they could use some help on D, though. After Morrissey, do they have that solid #2 guy? A lot of their top D prospects are puck movers.
What they don't have in that top-end talent, they have made up for with depth, and depth gets you enough to the playoffs, but the lack of the top-end ultimately hurts.
The picks they've had have overall been pretty good, but, looking at the roster, they could use an impact player or two in the pipeline, and you hope that's one or two of McGroarty, Lambert, Lucius, Barlow, or Perfetti. They're at least trending in the right direction, and you gotta be excited for a player like McGroarty if you're a WPG fan.
