He speaks, leads with tavares, he is tavare's right hand in fact off the ice and in the locker room and at summer camps etc, stores and grill parties, he thugs, gangsta's, fights, eats, yells, speaks more, and scores some too. A mucho importantte part of our stanley cup hunting gang.
Damn, Coach you rule again! You are in good shape!

Go look at hockeyfights.com and tell me how many of the players on the top page can play hockey better than Simmonds. The ratio is not very high. Yet, these teams keep playing them anyways.

I think in general the GM sees things a certain way and fans parrot that way of thinking to make sense of his moves. It's going to be hard to make a fan of the harlem globetrotters see the impact of intangibles like body contact.
It is not always how good you fight, it is will you.

He played his 1000th game. He got his contract and money coming in

I wish him a good retire life

Another words, GTFO

The fact theyve printed t-shirts goes to show how they vuew his role/impact internally.

Now, one can still go back and forth whether he deserves a spot over one of the Marlies. But inthink youd still be hard pressed that hes a liability at 8-10min on the 4th

Seems like a great guy, but for his role I think you need a prime age 27-28 year old guy to fill it. I don't think his contract is ever going to be a problem though. He might not be a big solution.

He'll never be part of the solution. Solution lies with Matthews, Tavares, Reilly and whoever is in net

But to say, well you know he's not the problem, that's not true as well
Because collectively he is part of the problem

If I say you know Engvall is not the problem, neither is Mikaheyev, neither is Kampf, then nobody is really part of the problem
But collectively, that all ads up

Simmonds brings nothing to this team. He can once in a while but once in a while I also act like a superstar at work

Maybe it’s not fair to single out Tavares like this, but as his game sort of declines and he becomes less and less a $11 million player, that just spotlights all the cheap parts in important and secondary roles the Leafs have to make room for him and can’t upgrade on. Everything has to be a Moneyball win for us to keep getting better.

Simmonds, eh. Is he young enough that his whole $900K can be sent to the Marlies? He’s not that high on my list of concerns for next year.

simmonds only do once a month what tucker do once a game. thats your problem to understand. Head of security need change. fighting doesnt do anything today. simmonds fight, go penalty box 5 minutes, then what? hand break if he fight twice. other team go back to hitting in playoff.

There is no playoff team that is going to be scared of the threat of Simmonds dropping the gloves. The teams this would work on are all golfing by then. We're the softest playoff team, everyone has someone who will gladly go 1 on 1 with Simmonds.

It's really weird a lot of people don't want to embrace this grit issue but at the same time praise someone who provides a dying skill. Dropping the gloves is his main move, he doesn't have the health to consistently forecheck hard. Unless Simmonds plans to fight Kucherov and break his jaw and put him on the IR, his physical game doesn't do anything to wear the other team down or force turnovers or bring any of the main benefits a physical/hard (smart) hitting game brings.

Still remember game 5 against Jackets. Werenski was playing hurt and not a single player finished a check on him. Let him roam free. Simmonds doesn't do much to bring this aspect of our game up.

Last year Anderson took healthy runs at everyone. Corey Perry got away with countless pokes after the whistle
Chiariot got under Matthews skin

Simmonds was uless last year's playoffs and he'll be useless again. He doesn't have the foot speed to hit anyone
He can't forecheck

So called in the locker room leadership getting to be highly overrated

He makes $900k and play on the fourth line. He’s the least of their problems.

Well then neither is Spezza and anyone who plays on the 4th line makes under million

I guess we can write off that entire line

Two questions come to mind.
What's your theory on why he's in the lineup every night?
How did you come up with his locker room leadership rating?

Leafs too soft yet don't need the toughest guy on the team.

Seems to be a contradiction.

Our problem lately is weak goaltending, d not covering guys in front.

Last playoffs it was lack of scoring as it was too easy to cover our one threat, Marner feeding Matthews.

But sure, let's ride the Blame Wayne Train

You don't need tough guys. You need guys that play tough
Yanni Gourde is 5'9 but plays bigger than his role. Those are the types of players you need

Wayne is a tough guy, when he can get to you. He's slow and by the time he gets to you, the puck is out

I don’t think Simmonds is slow, he’s fine in that aspect of the game. He just looks like he can’t play hockey offensively or defensively anymore. He contributes nothing outside of the fact he drops the gloves once in a while.

Cheap "possible' toughness along with name on the jersey

With many of Dubas's signing, hoping he would reclaim some glory from his past
Simmonds is tough. Just can't skate well enough to do the things he should be able to

Reaves is tough. Reaves comes at you at wave. He has a presence on ice. Players take notice if he's around
Simmonds doesn't do that enough. One game he's hitting maybe, next 10 he's not

I am not sure about locker room rating. SOmeone here suggested he's there for locker room presence

The advantage that Gourde had was he was fully insulated on TB and had a team full of backup.
If he washed a guy after the whistle 4 guys had his back.

If Engvall tries that he will be avalanched with Simmonds chirping from the bench.

He will play on a top 3 line to open up ice for our skilled guys in playoffs .. we still need 1 more Wayner type t replace Cliffy

Bunting Matty Wayner
Kase JT Mitch
Cliffy Kerfoot Willy

Mik Kamfh Engval

He's also a liability on ice. That 4th line gets hemmed in more than it should
Someone like Kassian(without the contract), Hathaway are the types you need

Even Matt Martin without the contract, who can skate and hit without being a liability

If Simmond doesn't fight, he really doens't bring much

Sounds like the issue is with the coach/gm, not the player. Simmonds is what he is, I don't think that's going to change at this point.

IMO, as far as issues go with the team he'd be pretty far down the list.

So 4 lines that won't score. Never. Add a scorer to JT & WN, maybe Robertson but we'll see.
Then a Dman that will clear out rebound vultures and hope for better tending.
