Why is Pastrnak averaging LESS than 20 minutes of ice time per game?

He's actually getting more ice time than he's ever had in his career right now. And he's averaging like 19:59 TOI/gm. So just barely under 20, not like it's 17:30 gm.

The Bruins have never been a team to run their horses into the ground during the regular season, and I think most teams would prefer to avoid that as well and have them more fresh for the playoffs. Look at the Oilers now, McDavid and Drai are getting > 1 min less than they were in years past.

Pastrnak is 32nd on TOI/GP in the league among forwards, but keep in mind that he plays wing and does not kill penalties.
There are some wingers of similar profile who play more minutes than him, but they are all star players within his tier (guys like Rantanen, Kucherov, Kaprizov, Connor only play 1-3 minutes more than Pastrnak)

Maybe he doesn't have as good endurance as guys like MacK or Rants? Maybe Boston wants to rest him as a league leader?

However, if it's not about endurance, he could probably fight for Art Ross this year which is shame. I don't see Boston is being stupid though. Ofc it's entertaining to see stars playing a lot and fighting for the awards but saving them for the playoffs isnt stupidness either.

I don't understand this type of managing of top players. He's one of the very best players in the league, but when you check the stats, he's averaging UNDER 20 minutes a game? Maybe Boston isn't such a well-managed organization after all.
Last year Boston pushed hard - went for all kinds of RS records. Was fun, exciting, and pretty cool. Until it wasn't. Until Florida kicked us to the curb in Round 1. Then? Not so fun, exciting, or cool.

In the process they played both Ullmark and Bergeron in a couple of end of season games that in hindsight they should not have.

So why would playing Pastrnak more now be any benefit given the situation they are in? By the way, as much as I love Pasta, he's not always totally defensively in it. Sometimes takes a mind vacation.

And unlike, ahem, one of our Division brethren, Boston appears to have felt for a long time that a 3-1 win is better in the long run than a 7-6 win.

Agreed....stats currently show him at exactly 20:00 min per game, which I think is the highest in his career to date (I didn't fact check this, but Boston almost never has forwards getting more than 20 min per game). Honestly, it's just a well balanced team, which makes for a good team.

Except Pasta is getting more ice time this year than he did last year.....which makes the topic kinda weird.

Every minute and bump and puck to the shin adds up on these guys over a full season. To do anything in the playoffs you need your top guys fresh as possible and you need your bottom 6 contributing good minutes.

16 forward this season play 20:30 or more a game

6 forward that do not play on the PK play 20:30 or more a game, it is not that common to play significantly more than Pastrnak 20:00 a game.

I agree. It's likely due to fact that with losing Bergeron and Krejci, the B's offense is a bit more pressured this year. I'm sure Pasta's time reflects that.

Either way though, B's definitely not going to ride him hard and, as many others have pointed out, the lack of PK work is and always has been a factor.

Boston literally had one of the greatest if not the greatest season last year...SEASON, they have nothing to prove in the season at all. For them it's cup or bust, so no need to burn out their best players so they can get 127 points as opposed to 118

Any winger getting over 20 minutes a game I assume is either just on an easy spot on the PP and they don't use a 2nd PP, doesn't play defense at all, or their bottom six is a disaster.

None of which is a sign of balanced team

My guess is that since they are winning the vast majority of their games and usually without having to make big 3rd period comebacks, that his minutes are down simply because he isn't needed in the final minutes.
