Why do we have 3 Goalies with 2 0n the way?

Not sure. Unless there's some diabolical plan to offload Mrazek (or Talbot?) in the offseason, which is kinda hard to realistically picture, I would've though they are better off riding this one out to then have Cossa in the NHL full time next season. Augustine will join Grand Rapids next season to I'd like to think

I do believe one of Cossa or Augustine will be trade bait eventually, but not any time soon really

Thought it was weird it was the only move to go down today. Seems this season might not ours sadly. Maybe the offseason virtually everything roster-wise gets blown up lol :dunno:

Only reason I can think of is Yzerman doesn't see Lyon coming back next season, for whatever reason.

You take Veleno's contract + Lyon's hypothetical contract next season, + about $1M more on top, and you get roughly Mrazek's contract. Difference is Mrazek has one year left while Lyon might have signed for less but more term.

Talbot and Mrazek are only signed through next season. I am not sure if Cossa is ready to be a full time backup in the big league yet, but he still has a chance to take that spot if he performs.

No idea. Even if you know you're not bringing back Lyon for next season, 1) there's no need to trade for a goalie now instead of getting one this summer, and 2) there's no need to go after one of the bottom tier players in the league.

Detroit downgraded in net for no reason.

If your trading for mrazek lyon is gone. Keeping 3 goalies for 20 games is beyond nonsensical

We got rid of a roster spot in veleno next season. Cool we added a goalie spot when cossa should been up for 1 which basically guarantees cossa back In g.r no matter what bs yzerman tries to spin about stealing a spot

Would have rather just given veleno away in the summer for futures at this point

If anything has come from this season, it has to be the excision of the idea Yzerman is blocking prospects. Maata was moved, Husso was waived, then traded, Holl waived, Fischer traded. All of these transactions were done save Husso being waived, to create roster space and playing time for the youngsters.

lyon can still be traded to a team with injured goalie struggling to make playoffs . he just wouldnt be able to play in playoffs . lyon and a 5th for a 3rd . at draft our two aquired 3rds for a 2nd

We going to lose Lyon, someone will pay him, I don't know why Yzerman did not trade him and expect Cossa another year in GR, could be couple of games for big club

We needed 1 goalie minimum signed this offseason. Preferably to a 1-year contract. This is just planning ahead.
Yes indeed, and if Cossa starts on the wings in October, then the contract value means they can send Petr to GR with little fear of him bein claimed.

The bar is low for Cossa to make the team next year, and even if Cossa is not on the wings at the start of the season, injuries will get him plenty of opportunities.

To digress a little, SY has opened another forward slot for next year to start the season with the moving of JV. (Can't see either of Motte and Smith back) If Kane comes back again, there is still room for 2F kids and 1D at the start of the season if SY thinks there are some that are ready to graduate after the GR playoff run, if not, they will get added throughout the season.

In 2 years time the wings will likely be one of the youngest teams in the league, all the current plugs are gone after this and next season, then the real team will be emerging making some noise.

SY will have some proven young roster players and some well developed prospects to work on for talent trades to fill in roster gaps, he is sticking to his philosophy to build a solid team, unfortunately, it requires a lot of patience and short term pain, so I will say the quiet part out loud, next season is not playoffs or bust either...but the one after most likely will be, and once they get to the show they will be there year after year for I suspect, many years.

To buy time. We actually have 3 goalies on the way, the kid in the “Q” Rudy Guimond is putting up some sick numbers at Moncton as well. In a few years our goalie pipeline should be the strongest in the NHL

We had that in Talbot. We also have Cossa looking like he’s ready to be backup or a 1B goalie. It’s a bad move no matter how you spin it.

I think you are one of the better and more informed posters on this board, but I disagree that Cossa is ready for 1B. I think he could be a backup, but that isn't what they want out of him. They want a no. 1.

I would relent and say the AHL goalie management has been a cluster with Campbell, Husso and Cossa. But then again, looking at the M.O. of upper management, they do like to surround the kids with veterans. ( I.e., Austin Watson helping Soderblom.)

/end

Mrazek is nothing more than planning for the 2025 season. Simply checking a box, while giving Cossa AHL minutes, then calling him "as needed" to dip his toe.

Love it or hate it, Yzerman is painfully patient.

Anyone who said Yzerman "doesn't have a plan" is short sighted. He has a plan, you may NOT like that plan.

And how many playoff-caliber years will Larkin have left in him by the time that painfully patient plan finishes unfolding? Or should we just plan to trade him and magically find another 1C?

Steve Yzerman was 32 until he won his first cup... so, yeah.

I don't disagree there's more building to do. And Yzerman hasn't even scratched the surface of any real 'hockey' trades yet. He's still in stockpiling and drafting mode.

I don't think it was ever a given that Larkin would still be here when we finally emerged from the rebuild into being consistently competitive. The problem with moving him, as you identify, is that we need a 1C in return and would have a hard time finding that value.

He was more than likely worried that the UFA goalies in FA would want multi year contracts. With Petr only signed for 1 year remaining he doesn't have to potentially block Cossa if they feel he needs 1 more year to marinate. He is looking to the future. Might not be the best option. But he is forward thinking. Doesn't want to sign someone for more term than he feels is necessary.
