Why do the Flyers host so many ~1:00 PM weekend games?

It feels like every weekend, the Flyers are hosting a 1:00PM game in their barn, usually a Saturday. I count 8 total home games of theirs at this time this year.

I checked my team the Rangers, they only host 4 such games. This is the worst game time to watch hockey imo, middle of the day on a saturday or holiday/weekend

Any reason why they play so many home games at this time?

Honestly that's a perfect time imo. Some nights I'm too tired to watch a game after work but Saturday afternoons are perfect, can sleep in a little, watch the game and then still have time to go out for the evening

Multiple

1. shared arena with other sports/ events ( NBA, indoor lacrosse, concerts)

2. their arena is across the street from the baseball and/ or football stadiums, thus shared lots. Rangers don’t have that problem. Other teams have this problem ( Detroit, Pittsburgh, nashville, vegas, denver, Raleigh, arizona did at their prior arena )

3. Generally hockey teams don’t want games going against home nfl teams games ( thus early games on Saturday’s with nfl Sat games). Buffalo only had a home Sunday game on teams bye weeks or schedule that for thurs/ Mon. In playoff season whrn games were uncertain as in week 17 sst games, they did sat early games wouldn’t conflict. 2 weeks ago they had a SJ game on MLK day ( school holiday) and bills had to push game to Monday 430. They moved SJ game up to 12 to avoid conflicts because there is some fans with tix to both and shared facility staff/ police services

4. visiting team is playing early on Sunday ( like national game on ABC) a Sunday early game means Saturday early game. You can’t do a 6 pm game thrn ne t day a 1 pm game.

5. I think one of those afternoon games aligns with hockey day in America.

6. most teams over a year run Saturday afternoon games geared around family games and bringing young kids to the game as promotions.

I wish more weekend games were early. Maybe not 1 but 2-4pm. Even time to get kids home and/or do something afterwards

To add….

many arenas in shared space have rules.

for example seattle baseball stadium is next to the football/ MLS stadium. Thry have rules on staggered stsrttimes which gives times for fans to exit before new fans come in. I think the rule is 5-6 hrs between start times. Depends on if it’s soccer which usually limits sales to lower decks vs full use of an NFL/ Taylor Swift

I like it when teams have their own traditions in scheduling. In baseball the Cubs play afternoon games every Friday. The Leafs play at 7pm EST on Saturdays for HNIC even when they're on the road out West (to the chagrin of Vancouver fans once a year). I dunno, I like the unique identities.

The Flyers share both the venue and ownership with the National Lacrosse League's Philadelphia Wings. The owners probably figure the Wings need the primetime slot to draw fans more than the Flyers do, and they probably save a lot on the logisitics having two events on the same day.

Today the Flyers played the Bruins in the afternoon and then the Wings played the San Diego Seals (who are owned by Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai) in the evening.

In early March I believe they reverse. Wings early, flyers hosting Ottawa for a HNIC broadcast.

a factor innthe scheduling is efficiency. With the flyers being off thr next 10+ days it makes sense to have thrm p,sy girst thrn cover thr ice and do other events.

thats the whole problem though

You're supposed to go out Saturday night to watch the game for the evening, not AFTER the game which was at 1pm

I agree 1pm games are f*cking horrible, sucks to be a Flyers fan just for that problem alone

The whole point is to look forward to Saturday night hockey, whether you're watching at home or out with friends

Not 1pm lol
