Why do goalies not use the two pad stack anymore

I see a lot of 5 hole goals that would be eliminated or at least greatly reduced if goalies used a two pad stack more often.

It's a pretty committed move, and not an ideal position to stop any subsequent rebounds.

But I see Quick do it from time to time!

Butterfly is more effective. If it wasn't, we wouldn't have a league of 95% butterfly goalies.

Quick is the only prominent goalie left who isn't butterfly.

It's a desperation save. If you have to stack the pads to save the puck, your goalie coach knows that either you weren't positioned correctly or you didn't read the play correctly.

It's the same reason why we don't see a lot of windmill glove saves.

Not a very efficient movement both to get into and out of.

You make the save, that's great.

But 99% of the time there will be a rebound and when you're lying on your side/back, you're going to get scored on if the other team gets to it first.

Except the ones where they make a routine catch and then windmill just to be cool. I ****ing hate that.

Holtby is good about that. Never embellishes his glove, which is the best in the league.

Its rare but like others have said I still see it occasionally. The announcers get excited about it too!

...........he 'stacks the pads'....................

They may not stack the pads as often anymore but they still......'flash the leather'

As a goalie who does it a little too often still, it definitely puts you in a tough spot if there are any 2nd chance opportunities. Looks awesome when it works, but you can look pretty silly if it doesn't.

Gotta wonder if that's something Ranford taught him? ;)

Maybe ;)

I will actually say it's less of a traditional one and more of a windmill in most cases. He's super unconventional, haha. He'll actually go to the two-pad stack as a setup for a different save. Most of the time we're going what the **** are you actually doing, and he makes the butterfly purists eyes bleed:

Consequently, this is why he looks really, really stupid frequently when he gets scored on.
