Both retired around the age of 30-32. Any idea why? Seems like they both could have had another 5+ years in them.

Injuries in both cases.

Pavel's knees were completely shot, similar to Bobby Orr.

Valeri didn't play during the 04-05 lockout, signed with LA for the following year, but a back injury forced him to miss that year as well. After 2 seasons without playing, he didn't have many options and retired.

This plus Valeri got a lot of criticism about his lack of compete level, he was a serviceable player but not a hot commodity.

Yeah, at that point he was a soft, kinda fringe-y 2nd line scorer who hadn't played in two years. He could certainly have stretched his career out in Europe for a few years but his family was based in California so that probably wasn't an option.

I believe Valeri said he could have rehabbed and made a return, but he lost interest and wanted to spend more time with his family.

There's this theory that their father Vladimir trained them too hard when they were very young, and that it took its toll in the long run. Pavel also had this kamikaze like playing style which didn't help a smallish guy from injuries. Valeri I don't know really, but he was even more smallish than his brother.

Didn't hear a lot about the theory of their father, but I definitely wouldn't count it out.

Pavel's style of play was reckless, but amazingly entertaining, and awesome to watch. But definitely took it's toll on him.

Valeri wasn't even close to the level of his brother, but like others said, I think his heart wasn't in the game as much.

i don't think i've ever read it anywhere, but i have floated that theory on this board a number of times. which is to say, this is a hypothesis dreamed up on a message board so take it for what it's worth. but stories about how hard vladimir pushed his boys when they were young, possibly to compensate for the shortcomings of his own career (two bronzes, which i guess the boys did do better than, though obviously not quite the medal vlad the dad had envisioned for them).

but doesn't it make sense? former two-time olympic medalist/maniac trains his two young kids with all of the rigour of the soviet sporting machine, and you just can't do that to kids while their bodies are still growing. i heard it a million times in my young teens: don't work out too hard while you're still growing because your joints aren't ready for it yet. and what ended up chronically breaking down early for the bures? pavel's knees and valeri's hip.

Do you blame Valeri for wanting to be around Candace Cameron more? I don't. Yowzers.

Pavel had his knee issues. Too bad, I was never a fan of his teams but he was one of those guys you admired and watched regardless............Gilbert Perreault, Denis Savard, etc. are other guys who I would never change the channel when they were on the ice.

Valeri... Well, players of his caliber out of hockey at 30 isn't a rare occurence + injuries. Think Mike Comrie.
