Why did Malkin say yes to his country and why didn't Crosby?

Unlike Malkin, Crosby didn't have to make up for his country's embarrassing performance at the Olympics.

Because Crosby doesn't care about b-class tournament called skoda cup? Nothing disgraceful in that.

Btw, isn't it disgraceful for Russia that their best players are playing in NHL, for american and canadian cities? In KHL atleast local russian fans would see their stars playing for their cities and teams.

Because Canadians don't care about the WC and there is no pressure on Crosby. If Crosby never played in another WC, no one would lose a moments sleep in Canada.

That is it in a nutshell.

The one to win is the olympics, Crosby captained his team to gold and Malkin and Russia flamed out.

There was a reason for Malkin to go and not much of a reason if any for Crosby.

Yeah. Malkin did need consolidation prize. Crosby didn't. In terms of international success probably both of them feel that this year couldn't have been any better.

Well, Malkin would have preferred a gold at the olympics but he made the best out of a bad situation I think.

Good for him.

Here in Canada we always hear that this is a big tourney in Europe- how true is that? How does it compare to Olympics? Is it much bigger in Russia than say Scandinavia

In 1989, LA KIng Gretzky said in the middle of their division series v. the Oilers, to the effect if my team gets beaten in the playoff, i'm taking the next plane to join Team Canada, already stacked with Yzerman, Hawerchuk, Stevens et al.)

He actually didn't go to give second rate hockey nations such as Russia a chance for a change.

Is that the answer you want? No one in Canada cares that Crosby didn't go, so I don't see why you're getting so upset about it.

Well I'm afraid we grossly misunderstand each other. I don't deny WOG >>> IIHF WHCs. But your country ended up humiliated, losing out to lowly Finland in the QF. and after the victorious final all Russia is all ecstatic and euphoric, 'we had our revenge' But let's leave alone those brainwashed Russia fans. All, to a man, are sure !) laid an an egg because there ain't up to pat, 2 (more intellectual fans) maintain Canada chickened out by not sending in a more competitive roster.

Yes, of course that is in a different time though. With all the reality behind concussions now that did not exist then if things were the same for him as for Crosby now would he have been as warm to the idea of going knowing one more hit at something like that would end his LA-LA land dreams?

I'm not so sure myself.

I do see Crosbys point for fluffing this tournament off considering the injury issues. Is he right? I don't know really.

I know he did play at the tournament I cared about and led Canada to gold so I am not going to give him too hard of a time for not going to this thing.

It is a blip on the sports radar in Canada so...................

I think it's disgraceful for Canada. Both were equally tired and frustrated over the Pens's elimination from the playoffs. But Geno accepted the invitation rightaway and Crosby afaik wasn't even considered.:o:o

Crosby will never play in a WHC. it's just not an important tournament in the grand scheme of things so long as the NHL continues with their Olympic experiment. If that ever changes, then all all bets are off...and we'll know soon in the next few months what the NHL plans on doing for 2018.

Two reasons...

1) Malkin had a crappy Olympics to make up for, and Crosby didn't

2) The WHC means something to Russians and very little to Canadians

None of Canada's available Olympic stars wanted to play in Minsk, not did any of the 55 players on Canada's preliminary Olympic camp roster.

The only time Crosby showed up for a WHC was in 2006 after he was snubbed in Turin and wanted to gain some international experience.

Because outside of Scandinavia and Russia no one cares about it. Did you see the US roster? Very few in North America value it as much.

I see what you are saying but i woke up and went out the day after Canada was eliminated at this thing and you know what? Not a soul mentioned a thing about the loss, nobody!!

And I hardly heard a thing after we won games either.

Now the olympics, well, that was a whole different matter. Each game was a endless daily rant on the streets with the people.

What I am getting at here is that you say Canada was humiliated but the vast majority of Canadians did not even know it was going on.

Trust me, fans in Canada watched and were on edge every day as they waltzed to Gold in sochi. They feel anything but humiliated these days.

The word humiliated does not even come into play by losing in a tournament most don't even know is going on.

He didn't go because the Kings overcame that 3-1 deficit in the series. If he had, Canada would of become World Champion that year, Makarov or no Makarov.

It seems you refuse to face the reality that while some harcore Canadian hockey fans care about the WHC, the vast majority do not.

Not saying that there were no Canadians upset by our loss to Sweden, but most Canadians were unaware that this tournament was even going on, a fraction of them followed the tournament, and an even smaller fraction of those were upset by our loss.

Canada is better at hockey than Russia. That is a fact. Get over it.
