Why did Kings have off year?

Guys,

I was just browsing "the analytics", and as I was looking things up, your team came up a lot as "good" in a lot of categories. (Corsi, Fenwick, Shots for, Shots against etc)

But the one negative was shooting %.

Not getting a lot of shots from scoring areas was the cause for the low shooting percentage.

A system which had players incapable of getting to scoring areas

An average back-up playing #1 for most of the year, while having a substandard back-up as his back-up (Zatkoff probably cost the team around 5-7 wins)

We don't score much, so in order to win our GAA has to be really low. Last year it was 2.45, which is the highest its been in 7 years.

The team also looked flat and uninspired most nights. Sutter is an awesome coach, but he was a few years past his expiration date.

Kopitar did not shoot the puck enough - same reason why we missed in 15'. He had 134 shots in the 15 season and 150 last.

Analytics reward high volume of shots. LA/Sutter employed a "shot mentality" and emphasized putting the puck on net regardless of the quality of shot (hence the low shooting %). Corsi doesn't care if you hit the goalie in the crest everytime, as long as you do it enough.

We need more out of Gaborik, Kopitar, Muzzin, Doughty, Toffoli and Brown.

Doughty gets a free pass because he's playing a ridiculous amount of minutes. Any time you have to play that much you're going to have to pace yourself, which is exactly what he's been doing. Unfortunately it's made him a less dynamic player. If Muzzin bounces back, and Forbort continues to emerge, hopefully that can take some of the burden off Drew.

While Brown played pretty well last year, he needs to be hitting the 40 point mark at least.

The team was still playing the system, but more mechanically and robotically - like it was before Terry Murray was fired. The fire and passion to get the greasy stuff was missing, and the high-end skill was not of sufficient quantity. The team looked spent.

Hopefully they have a bit more of the fire this year, fewer injuries, and an injection of enough youthful heart and skill.

Q out in the first 20 mins of the season changed the plan. Sutter tilted the ice and we protected our goal. The strategy was only partially effective. With AK and Tyler playing a great portion of the season hurt there was little chance of putting up O numbers. The defense was under siege all year. Sutter stuck with his plan.

Personally I don't believe any of the lazy assessments, or the idea that we need to ship every player on the squad off "before they lose value". No plan survives first contact with the enemy. No plan or player could have made last season a success. If you've been a fan for any length of time you've seen 10 of those seasons.
For me hope springs eternal. The team is moving in the right direction. 7.1.17 could be an important day.

Personally I don't believe any of the lazy assessments,

watch the average forecheck from the past 2 seasons and compare it to the forecheck in the '12 playoffs

there's a lot be said for laziness in terms of "getting to the spot" vs "forechecking". guys were content doing exactly what sutter told them to do instead of doing what he told them and then exerting a little bit extra

they were picking off pucks left and right, forcing deep turnovers over and over in '12, we saw them skate to the spot just outside the crease and stand there over and over last year
