Why did Detroit pass on Q. Hughes?

Just curious. I’m a Kings fan and thought it odd at the time. Never really put a lot of effort in diving into that decision but have come around to it again. Thought he was highly touted after his World Championship outing. Why did Detroit pass on the local kid?

Hughes wasn't even Holland's top D on his list that year...

And again... That's one of many reasons that 1. The Wings parted ways with Holland and 2. Followed up a 25 year playoff run with a franchise record playoff drought.

Pretty sure Zadina was considered to be a a bit of a faller(ranked top 5 everywhere, top 3 by on a lot of lists iirc) and the consensus thought was that Detroit made a good pick.

Zadina was seen as a near consensus top3 pick. He was a high scoring flashy scoring winger that only improved throughout the year. it was a surprise at the time that he even fell to #6.

at the time, it was not at all an odd decision.

Most people had Hughes around 7-9 on their lists that year. Heck, I ain't ashamed to admit that I had Dobson and Boqvist ahead of him on my list that year due to his size, lack of physicality, defensive deficiencies (at the time), and the love for the Hedman prototype that I share with many people.

Edit: Looking back, my list even had Ty Smith ahead of him until Christmas.

idk they probably wanted a forward. Also Zadina was expected to go top 3 so they (and the entire hockey world) thought they hit the absolute jackpot when he fell to them.

Hindsight is always 20/20.

I’m sure we can go back to the kings draft history and ask this same question for different players.

Every team has multiple picks where they wish they would have chosen someone else. They also have multiple picks where they look like a genius for making a particularly pick.

I just also want to talk about Zadina. He's got a decent shot this year but boy does get pushed off the puck so easily. He's such a lightweight, even when he tries to hit others and fails at moving the guy at all.
