Tournaments like these could spark interest in France.

They had a good showing. Something that they could possibly build on.

I actually like it.

Instead of cycling the ihwc through the same 4 or 5 countries, the iihf is showing a willingness to try new and/or smaller host countries. I personally think it's great that we've seen recent(ish) championships in places like Latvia, Belarus, and now Paris. Also Denmark is coming up. Maybe Italy hosts a tournament again sometime soon? Or they go completely off the board and stage a London WC? Keep it going I say!

The only game from team France I watched was their game against Finland. And in that game the arena was absolutely rocking. It was just outstanding.

Reports say that 6000 tickets are unsold for an evening game between sweden-swiss.

Swiss team said ice were worse in Paris and swedish team said lighting in the arena is terrible. Swiss also said it is really quiet in the arena.

France has no interest for hockey and nothing will come out of this. Swedish journalists said it was a giant party in Cologne but no one gives a damn in paris.

It obviously could have been. The 2010 tournament in Cologne and Mannheim (+Gelsenkirchen's stadium game) was a success.

I think the main thing IIHF considered, was generating more interest in France. In that way it's more "why couldn't it be hosted in two French cities." Germany, as I said already, just hosted in 2010, this was probably supposed to be France's tournament, but they got cold feet and didn't think it would work with both groups in France. Cologne's a 3 and half hours train ride away.

Maybe they also just really wanted to print Paris on their posters. It does make it sound worldlier than Mannheim, Herning, Ostrava or Košice.

I dont see the point of paris hosting it. Bad arena, bad ice, no interest and no hockey culture.

the queue for bashing the **** job Paris did starts behind me

Talked to a friend who works for the IIHF and I got the idea that it was planned this way because no matter how bad the french did--they kept sending teams

two Germany cities would have been soooooooo much better thten the gong show in Paris

remember

8th world in 9 years

Paris was a Joke

They easily could have. It was a decision to give some games to France. Not that I mind. Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to play them in Cologne/Düsseldorf (or Mannheim, or Berlin) although the arenas are a bit on the small side. But if it helps grow the game, go for it.

If i remember correctly from back when they applied to host this WC, it was the French who wanted to host but they didn't have a second arena or didn't think their bid would win alone, so they asked the German federation if they wanted to co-host.

Germany just hosted the 2010 tournament so they had no plans to host themselves

Edit: Found a quote from Franz Reindl (president of the German hockey federatiion) from 2012:

"Der Antrieb kam vom französischen Verband, der ein solches Turnier alleine nicht ausrichten hätte können. Unsere Motivation wurde natürlich auch durch den Erfolg der WM 2010 gefördert"
("The impulse came from the French Federation, which could'nt have hosted a tournament like this on their own. Of course our motivation was supported by the successful 2010 World Championships")

It's likely this. I'm not sure about other multipurpose arenas in France that have ice plants that are the size of AccorHotels Arena or larger, but offhand I think the biggest rink in Ligue Magnus is Patinoire Charlemagne in Lyon and it seats 4200 or so.

It was worth a try, going to a non-traditional host. Maybe they didn't end up doing a stellar job in some aspects but sometimes you need to give it a shot. I bet the players, their families and all the media people were happy to have it in Paris.

If there is one, it's on the Swiss border.

Absolutely. With few exeptions, clubs of the Ligue Magnus are pretty much from that area with Lyon, Gap and Grenoble probably being the most significant ones...correct me if I'm wrong:)

Because hosting it in Germany only was too nationalistic for our politicans. They wanted this to be a symbol of multinationalism.
Yeah I know that sounds crazy to any normal thinking Person in a normal Country but that's the reality of our sad Country These.
We should be gratful that the puck is still black and wasn't replaced by a rainbow colored one.
It may be true that the French came up with the idea originally but I remember quiet clearly how this idea of a pan national tourney was euphorically pushed and embrassed by German politicans.

Basically same as in sweden these days.

Bollocks, the Reindl quote showed that it was France approaching. So German politicians can't do anything if France doesn't offer. And btw. French German friendship is the biggest symbol of peace in Europe. Go ask your granny or great granny if they are still alive. Nothing wrong with celebrating that. And hardly new either. If footy can do it multiple times, hockey can, too.

Latvia and Belarus have both great hockey cultures, France has not.

Thx for the map. How am I wrong though? You know where Switzerland is? I can reach all of those places except 4 or 5 within just a few hours. You even have direct trains from Switzerland to most of those cities.

Great to see Paris get to host this event. Such a great city, be nice to see it gain footing in the world of hockey.

I sure do. Most of those teams are located either far away from Switzerland or closer to the Italian or German border though.

Closer from the Italian alps or some small German villages?
I used to live in Grenoble so I know a bit about the area. I don't think many of those places are closer from any major Italian or German cities than they are from Geneva or Basel and it doesn't even matter if you travel by car or by train.
