Cory Pronman did this where he imagined a 31st NHL team that drafted 16th overall (middle of each round) and given who had already been drafted picked who he liked as if he were a GM. He did this for the past 3 or so drafts and created his own prospect pool for his team. He used his own draft boards so this is a bit different but the same kind of idea.
Example: This past draft Max Domi went 12th overall so he is off limits because you are drafting at #16, but Hunter Shinkaruk went 24th overall so he would be available to draft.
My take in 2013 with the idea that I'm in NJ's position where obviously there is a lean towards forwards. All drafts earlier BPA. Also I'm only going to the 3rd round because after any farther and its just picking a prospect whose numbers look good, has size, etc. (basically a waste of time). There are some flaws with this when drafting further back with their stock being higher/lower with better/worse seasons (ex: Severson). Remember this isn't perfect.
