It goes without saying that Komisarek is our prime amnesty buyout candidate this summer with a 4.5 cap hit and 2013-14 still under contract. That said, who would be the secondary buyout, if we were to use it? (I say this with people saying the Leafs shouldn't waste one on Connolly, as if 2 should be used this summer)

Grabovski? 4yrs, 5.5m cap
JML? 3yrs, 3.9m cap
Phaneuf? 1yr, 6.5m cap
Komisarek. 1yr, 4.5m cap
Kulemin? 1yr, 2.8m cap

With everyone else on the roster either too cheap to bother, or an impending UFA this year, who gets cut? Or should we not exercise the amnesty option?

disclaimer: I'm not saying anyone should be, I'm just posting the question. Put down the pitchforks.

If we're not contending, and we're not against nor need the cap, then it seems odd to me that we would use our valuable amnesties unnecessarily. Why Komi when he only has 1 more season left, at that point?

Seems like over the next 8 years those amnesties could come in very, very handy to some desperate teams.

I thought the amnesty buyouts were for this offseason only and non-transferable?

One choice for me is Liles. Liles was -16 and only had 6 points in his final 32 games after returning from his concussion. He was really terrible offensively.

If he can only must 5-10 points in 48 games, he'll be bought out. Especially with Rielly/Gardiner in the system. It's cheaper and more effective puck moving at that point.

Can you post the rules of the buy-outs?

Might help some people understand what players actually fit the criteria.

Knowledge is not a bad thing.

We know for accelerated buy-outs it is players making at least 3 million per season.

Probably the ones who don't look very good after the next 48 games.

Komi.

Holzer, Blacker and possibly Reilly might be knocking on the door for a roster spot. Clears space and opens up a spot.

The basics are ...

There are 3 buyout periods.
1. Before this season starts.
2. At the end of this season
3. At the end of next season

The team is still dealt FULL cap hit for the year the compliance buyout is used.
So there is no point in using it on players with one year remaining.

Moral of the story is there is no reason for us to use one till the end of the season.

Unless we really... realllly just had enough Komi. lol

I dont know if the Leafs buyout anyone.

Giving up a pick for Komisarek on a 1 year deal, to a team where Leafs take on salary, may be more desirable than signing him to a multi-year deal.

Well, there are regular buy-outs and compliance buy-outs, along with the accelerated compliance buy-outs.

I know accelerated applies to players making 3+. Kulemin does not qualify.

I'd buy-out Komi after this year, I can't stand him. He's been here long enough, I rather not watch his act next season as well.

Ding ding ding...

Komisarek... if he doesn't look good this year, he's gone.
Liles, if he looks good, he is tradeable, assuming we think he can be replaced from within. If he sucks, goodbye.
Grabovski... well, he's going to have some trade value if he continues to do well.

It really comes down to how people continue to play.

Accelerated compliance buyout is the exact same thing as the compliance buyout.
With the addition of this year being a full cap hit. The cap hit is obviously still there anyway if you made the player sit a year.

All it does is get the players back to UFA status this year rather then make them sit a year.

This is Koni's final contract year. Sending him home early would not save them a cent. I just want him out. Let Fraser have his spot.

I think it would be best to buy out Liles if he isn't good this year.

Komisarek would be on his last year...best to buy him out without the amnesty.

I doubt anybody is bought out unless were acquiring someone to buyout if thats even Allowed. with one year left on Komi's contract it's not worth it imo, if Liles or Grabo have a bad year you try and trade them for something or give them another year to turn it around if after the 2nd year these guys didn't get any better then there really the only options at that point. so to me no one in summer of 13 will be bought out.

Yea I got a little confused about this yesterday, and there were a few different versions of it online I wasn't sure what the proper one was. Thanks HF posters for pointing me in the right direction.

I say the two guys you have to watch out for getting Amnesty from Toronto over the summer are:

1: Komi, I think his cap space will be better used else where.

2: Grabo, depending on his season, and weather or not under the new cba if he's worth 5.5 million to the leafs. he's basically getting a Million dollars for every 10 points.

I guess it all depends on how much cap space the leafs want next season? If they consider Grabo's contract to be bad enough to amnesty or if they can live with it for the duration. Komi I think is pretty much a sure goner over the summer.

I think the most likely candidates are Komisarek and Liles. Both of them will have to prove they can be serviceable players this season.

Also, I like Liles, but he was flat out terrible when he came back from his concussion. If he can return to form though, I'd love for him to stick around.
