This should be permawarded to Slavin. Not only does he take less penalties than anyone else while playing D, he legitimately is the kind of person the award was meant for. He’s not just a clean player, he’s actually an upstanding fellow who’s out there to be respectful to the opponent.

Just to put an asterisk beside/provide context to Matthews’ totals, half of his 20 PIMs came from a 10 minute misconduct penalty that was given out to every Leaf and Sabre who just happened to be on the ice at the time. His actual involvement in the brawl was minimal.

Anyways, any of these three would be deserving, but I agree that Slavin has the edge just because taking that few penalties as a defenseman is impressive, and is further evidence of his surgical stick work.

I wouldn’t really call Petey or Matthews gentlemanly players. They just don’t take a lot of penalties. That’s impressive, but I don’t think that alone should qualify them for this award. I don’t know Slavin that well so he got my vote between the 3 by default.
