May as well hire a cockroach on life support to replace Torts.

I can't really see the roach being much worse.

Since Torterlla reminded the world this tournament why he shouldn't have an NHL coaching job, I'm assuming there will be a new coach representing Team USA at the next world hockey event.

Who replaces Tortella?

Looks like the pickings are slim though. I was unaware that USA had a very low amount of NHL caliber coaches. Here's a list of them:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:American_ice_hockey_coaches

Looks like the top choices to me are Mike Sullivan, Peter Laviolette, Jack Capuano, or even Lou Lamoriello.

Who do you think becomes the next team USA coach?

Why are you so sure that he will be replaced?

Some people are very "drawn" to someone like Tortorella.

He does many thing well, but he plays a drastically different style than -- any -- other coach in this league right now. It is as if nothing has changed since 2004... His assumption must be that he is smarter than anyone else. This has been obvious for a very long time, it has been obvious for a very long time that Torts' game plan was very flawed, everyone is pointing it out now -- but it was definitely obvious 10 years ago.

But he just keeps getting chances after chances after chances. Zero results.

I don't at all like his aura and how he handles his environment and himself. Its just extremely disrespectful to a lot of people that he completely refuses to adjust his game plan despite how flawed it is. John "Ponzi" Tortorella.

in a tournament this short, the roster construction is even more important. How does negotiating contracts, managing a cap and building a team to compete for 82 games + 16 wins give one any insight into what it takes to win six games max against the best. Most of these other teams were assembled by former NHL stars - Lehtinen, Satan, Lidstrom, Yzerman/Gretzky in the past for Canada. If I were a USA fan, I'd feel much better with a Lafontaine or a Chelios picking the team.
Oh, and Cooper should coach - he's dual and has never coached for Canada yet.

I think I'd stay with Tortorella.

USA doesn't really have a lot of proven top end coaches. I would go with Laviolette. Tortorella and Capuano are horrible. Sullivan hasn't coached a full season yet. Laviolette is one of the better coaches in the NHL.

Not only that, bu if Columbus doesn't do well this season, this definitively will be his last season as a head coach in the NHL ever... He is terrible

How did this idiot get the call to begin with?

I didn't realize this until the article linked below, but apparently the geniuses running team USA really wanted a coach who currently didn't have a coaching job so he could focus on the world Cup.

So they hire someone no one thinks is worthy of coaching, then to make it worse, Columbus panics and hires the idiot. So now they have a bad coach with no time to focus on the World Cup.

Great thinking guys!

I'm sure Sullivan will be in the mix. Jon Cooper as well. The cabal of American NHL GMs (which is pretty large) needs to get their heads out of their ***** though.

I was confused why a guy like Housley was on this staff as well. I know people who have been coached by him and they all describe him as a very pedestrian coach. (yeah yeah yeah, I know he was a good player). Why would Laviolette's assistant be picked before Laviolette to assist Tort? Look at Canada's coaches -- all big time head coaches in the NHL.

Probably because he won the world juniors

Good point about sullivan. Everyone wants to anoint him, but there was another coach that won a Cup with a crosby team in his first partial season, and look what everyone thinks about him now.

It takes a while to get a fix on how good a coach actually is, because the league changes. Catching it by surprise one season doesn't necessarily mean you are a great coach.

Even if Kessel, Johnson, etc. went I don't see U.S. beating Canada anyway, especially in a best of three. Canada is just that much better than every team. Of course U.S. maybe puts up a better fight but the results would be the same.

kessel was the rightful conn smythe winner.

the fact lamiorello left him off juat shows toronto sour grapes
