Who is to blame on Senators inconsistency?

I blame Cameron. He is a shape shifting reptilian.

Looking at a team like Boston that's has won a Cup, been to another finals and is about to win the division and has a top 5 prospect pool - they have dealt away two young superstars and Fougie Hamilton who is considered a top pairing D - they have a team first approach from the Coach to the players and only acquire or commit to players that play a team first game.

Ottawa has to many me-first players (Ryan, Hoffman, Chiasson (who compared himself to Cory Perry so we know what he thinks of himself)

We have team fist guys obviously and excellent team first guys - but two of our top line players are not committed to team play, our coach cannot get his players to play defence and the GM committed big money to Ryan, is sticking with guys like Cowen, Chiasson, Weircoche, dealt Bishop, Dealt Lehner, dealt Nic Foligno (even trade but he's a Captain in the NHL, Fisher, Kelly - huge character guys. In return for these guys we basically got nothing to show for it besides Methot and some crappy draft picks)

We have traded away so many character players and committed to soft players who are not committed to team play.

The organization doesn't have a team first philosophy. The players all get along well, that's because they don't hold each other accountable and don't demand that each other play hard.

We'd all love to have a job where we got paid huge money but never had to put in an extra work in overtime or make any tough calls, just always take the easy way out. This is why we suck.

And the fans look at a guy like Zach Smith who plays hard, plays to win, has skill and speed and 90% of the fanbase want him traded - stupid. And 90% of or fanbase this Ryan is a great player. This is why we suck, because it has been so mediocre here for so long we can't even recognize players that play to wn, and players that play to score.

Cameron does not coach the team Murray has tried to build. Cameron's ideas on how to play the game do not fit with the players on the roster. Cameron wants grinding - Murray is building (trying to) a speed/finesse team within Melnyk's budget.

Melnyk's financial vulnerability may be exposed with the new pharmaceutical lawsuit. Murray, while surviving his cancer, has needed to focus on that, and Dorian, Lee and Alfredsson make up a hydra like management team with many different opinions and experience. Cameron and his inefficient assistant coaches (especially Smith) do not follow any semblance of the watered down direction the above want the team to take, so he creates his own.

Any coach who plays Borowiecki on the top line and pimps Chiasson over Prince, Cowen over anybody, etc, etc, etc is just asking for a spanking. I hope he gets let go as soon (if not before) as the season is over.

And Murray needs to spend more time with his family. We need a GM who can finish the job he started - and I do not think that is realistically Dorian or Lee. And if Melnyk loses his suit, we may have a three headed monster to deal with in the short-term future.

Nonsense,Ryan does work the corners hard and sticks up for teammates .Smith had played well with Stone ,funny how whenever Stone was paired with Zibby ,HE DIDNT PRODUCE .either .But ryan with Turris or stone with Turris they both look great and produce quality numbers .Zibby is the drain on whichever line he plays with ,he just doesnt have the smarts or high enough skill level .To actually center a top 6 line

I hate to admit it, but Zibby is about as inconsistent a player as any on this team.

It's obvious that whoever plays with him often suffers.

Yep we cycle through wingers with him and nothing works ,add in a a shooting winger that cant win a puck battle to save his life. And there you have about as weak a 2nd line as there is

PoutineSpoonz posted this interview from Pierre McGuire in another thread and I actually think Pierre hits the nail on the head. (Here) He talks about how the Senators don't have a team identity, and it looks that way from management on down.

Are they a run and gun team? Defensive zone team? Physical/hard to play against team? I'm not sure what they are as the team doesn't excel at anything. And I think that's the key to the inconsistency. The players aren't sure what style of hockey they're supposed to play.

I'd say the problem was and still is our defence. We spent two thirds of the season with only one functional d-pairing: Methot-Karlsson. We spent two-thirds of the season with only 3 NHL-calibre defencemen. Because of this we ran Karlsson into the ground by playing him over 30 minutes per night. By the time Phaneuf was traded for, Karlsson was running on fumes. I still feel he isn't skating when he plays. Cameron needs to shorten his shifts.

I don't think the injuries to MacArthur and Turris affected us much because Pageau and Smith stepped in so well that it's hard to think our first line would be producing more. However Hoffman and Ryan shoulder some blame. Zibanejad is still too young to be relied on consistently.

So really it's the defence. Having Phaneuf for a whole year will help a lot, if Cameron can manage to play Karlsson shorter shifts and under 28 minutes per game.

Zibanejad isn't too young to be relied on consistenly. That theory needs to go out the door. He's bottom 6 material and that's fine, but if we can trade him to solidify our D, that would also be fine.

He's scoring at 0.6ppg at 22. I don't think there are many centres his age doing better than that. I think that's pretty reliable for a 22 year old.
