The core as it was designed is Tkachuk, Sanderson, Stützle, Pinto, Norris, Batherson and Chabot.

It will evolve over time. I don’t think Chabot will be a part of it long-term, and Norris’ injuries could take him out of it too. Top 5 (ish) pick will likely get thrown in there, same with Greig.

The true core within the core is Sanderson/Tkachuk/Stutzle imo, in that they’re the untouchables.

They can't realistically trade Zub either.

If the core of a team is around 4 or 5 players, then out of this roster I'm going:

Sanderson
Tkachuk
Jimothy
Pinto

Even then, I'd probably trade any of them if the return was worth it.

Thought about including bath and Grieg, love em both, but the thing is, these are guys you trade at full value when they price themselves out of the line up.

I agree but I wouldn’t classify that as untouchable in the way the three are, in that if they had better RD depth they could at some point. The other three are unlikely to go no matter who is on the team, unless they want to or we blow it up. I don’t even think we can realistically trade Pinto either.

I was actually having this conversation with a buddy and I was curious what Staois line-up board would look like based on who he deemed to be a core players for this team and the holes he would ideally like/need to fill

I imagine it’s this (not including Norris but I imagine he would be included)

Tkachuk-Stützle-Giroux
xxx-Pinto-xxx
Grieg-xxx-xxx
xxx-xxx-xxx

Sanderson-Zub
xxx-xxx

Stutzle
Sanderson
Tkachuk (if he goes another year being a Minus player than I wouldn't consider him in the core but I that he isn't going anywhere)
Chabot (Want to see how he does next year playing behind Sanderson)
Pinto and Greig (love me some young fast Centers who can play without the puck too)

xxxxxx - Stützle - Batherson
Tkachuk - Pinto

xxxxxx - Greig - Giroux
Ostapchuk - xxxxxx - xxxxxx

Mathieu Joseph can play in any of these spots, no way I'd trade him in the near future. I see no reason to move on from Kastelic too, still young and cheap, can fill a 4th line spot

Sanderson - Zub
Chabot
- xxxxxx
xxxxxx - xxxxxx

Erik Brannstrom plays the same role as Joseph, versatile player who can fill any positiong needed. I see no reason to move on from JBD too, still young and cheap, can fill a 3rd pairing spot

Norris can't be considered core for now until he stops running into injury problems. I know there would be arguments against Chabot but does anyone see any reason why we should move any of the other guys in bolded? (Giroux isn't bolded because he's 36 y/o)

This list changes daily and mostly on game days. I cannot decide, but at times even the so called untouchable end up on my naughty list. This is a position that Staois and company are going to really have to assess.

If we were to go by Pierre McGuire's old 7 man core idea of two elite centres, a power forward and a specialist winger, #1 dman, shut down dman, and a top goalie, then Pinto and Grieg are keepers and especially valuable now while cheap. No desire to trade them. But i dont know that i can place them in that 7 man type of core yet.

For how far we are along this rebuild, the answer is not enough guys are part of the core.

Legit core pieces: Tkachuk, Stutzle, Sanderson. Guys you realistically do not want to trade.

Norris is paid like a core piece but is nowhere near one at this point. Chabot is arguably a core piece I would say but he has his own issues. Chychrun should be a core piece but he's nowhere near.

Guys like Pinto, Zub, Greig are valuable pieces but they shouldn't be considered core pieces. On a good team they would be nice supporting pieces to a strong core but now we are discussing them being part of the core. Just shows how weak this team really is.

They're all slowly becoming Losers

All of them

With each loss it becomes part of the fabric , even slowly with Sanderson ... he's becoming more one speed hockey player ...

They just don't know how to Win, they're not winners

Tkachuk - Stutzle - Batherson
XXXXX - Pinto - XXXXX
Joseph - Norris - XXXX
Kelly - Kastelic - Ostapchuk

Sandy - XXXXX
Chabot - Zub
Kleven - XXXX

That’s what I got. No goalies and need 2 top 6 forwards and a 2 RD to complete the team

Those guys + Zub and Greig
Zub, Greig, Sanderson, Stutzle, Pinto, Batheron, Tkachuk, Giroux. Maybe Kleven, he's the type of player this team needs more of.

I wouldn't be looking to trade Joseph he's on a good contract for what he brings. The rest of the guys I don't care if they are here or not.

I'd be actively shopping Chabot and Chychrun. Too soft, too injury prone, not winners.

Core A: Tkachuk, Batherson, Stutzle, Norris, Pinto, Sanderson (top 4 RD)
Core B: Greig, Kleven, JBD, Ostapchuk, Sogaard, Kastelic
Not Core - over 25 yrs old is too old to be core players IMO (Giroux, Joseph, Zub, Chabot, Chychrun)

brady turns 25 in like 5 months though?

But I disagree that Zub isn't core though. With that way this roster is built he is one of our most valuable players.

Steady, high hockey IQ, physical, great defensively. JBD is no Zub replacement.

Batherson turns 26 in 2 weeks so he's also too old to be a core player.

Just because they are not core doesn't mean they aren't part of the team they are, it's just at their age at some point we have to start thinking about the position & potentially upgrading if or when required. Brady turns 25, but will be 25 for another full yr, same for Batherson. Zub is valuable, but he is also 28, if JBD who is 23 continues to improve by the time he is 25/26 could pass him or if they draft a decent RD I would hope would have the potential to pass him too in a few yrs. That doesn't mean we trade Zub, it means he drops a spot if he gets passed. Surround the core with good vets & have a place for young players to have a path forward to reach their potential.

At this time I'd say we don't have a well defined core, when you are trash, there is no real point in thinking about who is the core.

I'd rather rank players in terms of "untradeability". The only two players I wouldn't trade under almost any circumstance are Sanderson and Stützle.

I don't want to trade Tkachuk or Batherson etc. but I'd trade any of them before I'd look at Sand and Stü. We suck, this roster needs major surgery so having too many untradeable/core players will achieve nothing except getting in the way of improving.
