Speculation: Who is our goalie next year?

With the news that Hellebuyck is likely played his last game with Winnipeg, this puts the Jets in a position where we really don’t have any NHL-ready internal options. Holm and Sal are progressing but not to the extent where either would even be ready for backup duties.

So I ask you all this… who is our goalie in October?

Is there a team needing to shed cap that has a 1A/1B? Is there a team with their “next guy” having shown he’s ready and the current placeholder is moving on?

There's only one choice.

This versatile crowdpleaser's got the pedigree, the skillz and experience, a full set of Chicklets, and the ears of a champion.

And the price is right.

Alternatively, a decently durable goaler who doesn't suck, and another guy who doesn't suck a little less.

I'll go with Vanacek (after we trade Hellebuyck to New Jersey) and (spins wheel of cheap veteran UFAs....) Alex Stalock

Jeff Marek mentioned Joey D'accord on the last 32 Thoughts pod. Seattle claimed him from Ottawa in the expansion draft and sent him to the AHL. .930 sv% in the Calder Cup playoffs with 2 shutouts in the final so far. 26 years old. Might be worth a flyer as a backup?

Joey Daccord is my choice as a backup with upside. He’s had very good numbers in the AHL over the past several seasons and has shown reasonably well in the NHL when he’s been called up.

I’m going to guess one of Vanecek, Korpisalo, or Antti Raanta is their guy next season. Carter Hart is a fine option but that’s going to cost us more than Chevy has been willing to pay IMO

I don't see a scenario next year where our goaltending is actually better than the last X years with Helle.

I've always believed (or maybe just hoped?) that a well built team with depth (Carolina and Vegas for example) doesn't need a Vezina candidate in net. Adin Hill is about to win a Stanley Cup and I can't say I even knew that name until this year.

Helle was a fantastic pick and player for us. But he covered up a lot of warts. I would like Chevy to actually remove the warts if that's possible.

Unfortunately if anything there will be more warts icing a less talented team next year. Any goalie can go off and have a hot year so but yea on average we likely w9jt have as good of it.

Hellebuyck…..because Chevy
Beat me to it. Fact is, all we've been told is that Helly won't sign another contract here but he is still under contract for the coming season. There is a stubbornness to this organization to hold out for what they want, not just the best offer. Whether what they want back is realistic we'll never know if a deal doesn't get done this summer.

We could easily start the year and finish the year with Helly. How is that possible? They are doing well at the TDL and don't want to give him up, or Helly is injured at the TDL and can't be moved. He could play here and walk for nothing. Be prepared for that eventuality.

My pipe dream: Trade extended Helle for a 1RHD and 1st rounder. Call up Holm, rebuild for 3-4 years and have DD finally graduate and take the starting job (I know, I know, goalies are voodoo).
