This guy Corey Pronman acts like he's some big shot hockey scout where all I can see is he is just a writer who throws around a bunch of buzz words and advanced statistics.

Who is this guy? How is he qualified to write about hockey for ESPN and other sites? By his own admission, he went to college for computer programming and business...and now he's some wannabe scout?

I see way too many people retweet Q and A tweets of Pronman's and he seems like a complete fraud to me.

Anyone hear him talk in an interview? Doesn't sound like a guy who really knows what he's talking about (sounds like he should be doing my math homework) http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/7707193/highlight/82189

This thread isn't trying to be demeaning but I really am getting tired of seeing this guy's stuff all over the internet hockey community.

Thoughts?

I follow him, he gives some good insight into prospects. Why the bitter tone, did he speak poorly about one of your team's prospects? :sarcasm:

I just don't particularly enjoy when others talk about stuff they aren't qualified to talk about-- and get paid and heralded for doing so. My problem is people asking him for opinions on players and thinking he's a scout, when he is just a writer/reporter like any media guy out there.

The second problem is that he watches player through video since he can't actually attend games since he isn't a scout, and we all know that video scouting isn't actual scouting.

It's fine if you're posting about it on a forum, but being paid to do so and getting gigs with ESPN is laughable.

Are you the one paying him to write for ESPN? Is he holding a gun to your head to read his articles?

Here's what you do: stop reading his articles and tweets.

This thread seems personal and unnecessary.

That said, Why isn't he qualified to write about hockey? There are GM's that didn't even finish school and yet they are somehow qualified to run a multi-million dollar business. *shrug*

Corey does talk to scouts so what he does isn't really much different than what Bob McKenzie does when it comes to prospects. I also fail to see how he is any different than the HF writers. The only difference is usually he takes the time out of his busy day to answer questions. Readers tend to respond to that.

Not to mention the scouting community is flawed itself so the more voices we have the better IMO.

please. people complain bout player salaries yet we aren't the ones paying them either. same thing.

I can't not see them when they're shoved down my throat on twitter and HFBoards.

Lowetide (the King of the Oilers blogosphere) loves him. I've read his stuff and really enjoy it. Like other posters have said, sounds like sour grapes from you based on nothing.

I said it wasn't personal and not demeaning, and it is relevant to prospect discussion. If this thread is removed then I will appeal. Just listen and read what the guy says, he isn't a hockey guy. He is a numbers guy, just like some other questionable writers such as David Staples and Cam Charron.

He isn't any different from the HF writers, that's actually an excellent point that you bring up. Most internet blogosphere type writers are hackjobs. There are a select few who actually attend games and know their stuff.

I just don't want the public to be fooled when they ask him prospect questions.

People should be going to guys like Brian Huddle if they want prospect stuff.

Who are you to qualify whether someone should write about prospects? His appeal is the fact he takes a different approach to analyzing a prospect's game.

You do know that just because you claim it isn't personal or demeaning doesn't absolve your posts from it. I mean you literally posted:

What's the point that you're trying to make here? I have no clue who Lowetide is and Oilers bloggers are jokes in general.

I beg to differ.

Vic Ferrari might be the most renowned hockey blogger I know of. He first noticed that the Oilers were of the habit of picking up players with high PDO's and dumping players with low PDO's.

David Staples is a numbers guy who doesn't actually understand numbers. Pronman isn't anything like him.

He is not scout by profession, but he does get to watch players when he can. Yes, he does use video, but so do the Buffalo Sabres so it's not as if he is using some far out method. He also talks to many professional scouts. He does have valuable insights to share.

Some of his opinions may seem out there, but the professional scouts get it wrong majorly at times so I am not really bothered by it. There is no exact science to scouting.

Should have clarified: bloggers who spend their entire career writing about advanced stats are the questionable ones. Why do I care what Vic Ferrari first pointed that out? (side note, I guess that really hasn't helped the Oilers, eh? Flame away advanced stats minions).

This thread has really questioned my faith in society.

You created an account just to diss Pronman? What a joke. And I'm so glad to have finally learned that video scouting isn't real scouting.

He's fairly knowledgable. I do think he relies on advanced statistics to much some definitely always interesting to glance over though

Also I feel he favors skill way to much of the time

Also I'm not a fan of the trend of writers sloppily leaning upon stats as a crutch for there poor writing skills. Pronmans not really guilty of this at all but the trends gaining momentum and pretty soon it's going to be similar to baseball

Sabres don't do that anymore.

We don't know if he is actually talking to scouts though (see: ***************).

edit: umm, I posted the name of a Twitter hack who goes by the name of HI, and it is censored. fyi

It's just a different outlook on the game. You really don't need to take it personally.

No one is forcing you to agree with or condone the use of advanced stats.

Because I clearly didn't have 40 some posts before creating this thread.

Sue me for objectively criticizing a member of the online media. I guess we're not allowed to do that. I forgot, it's the 1980's Soviet Uniion and not 2012 democratic free speech society around here.

Video scouting is not real scouting.
