Who else besides Drouin could Montreal have gotten for Sergachev?

You have got to think he could have been put in a Duchene deal because they NEED someone that can play C right now they got nothing

Potentially, if you traded Sergachev ++, you could have got that ideal piece back, but that requires that piece to be for sale first.

And no, I don't mean someone like Duchene. You cannot risk Duchene walking in two years and then you are missing Sergachev for nothing. I mean a deal like how Johansen was available, someone with RFA control, but he was likely available only because of a schism between him and the team. In that situation it would take much more than a prospect, even one as good as Sergachev.

So really, the Habs did as well as they could have hoped. Drouin could be developed into a center too, if it's that important.

Despite the French name, Duchense doesn't speak French. Let's face it, Rouin being from Quenec attracted Montreal more. And Duchense really looked bad last year.

Would've Montreal rather taken Johnson since he's a center?

Zero chance
The difference in value between Drouin and Johnson is huge
Also it was reported Yzerman offered Johnson for Sergachev, but Bergevin declined

I'm amazed they got Drouin.

Sergachev isn't a can't miss prospect, and even though he's a W, getting a 22 year old 50+ point player is pretty damned good for a guy who hasn't done anything at the pro level.

As much as we need a center, I don't think there was anything out there in terms of value that beats Drouin.

I advocated moving Sergachev for Duchene earlier in the season, but I'm very happy with Drouin.

I think it was a good trade for both teams. TB needed some better D prospects. We have a lot of solid forward prospects so getting a D like Sergachev is good value for a player who didn't want to be in TB or was really even a player we could afford. It also made some sense for Montreal getting a local French Canadian star. I think Sergachev would have been able to fetch a center that they need but Drouin worked too. They still need a true #1 center and they don't grow on trees.
