Depends what “great” means. If that’s McDavid/MacKinnon superstar shot generation and puck possession - then that, in an absolute landslide.

If you are that good at tilting the ice and applying pressure and stress to the other team, what your defensive aptitude or role is doesn’t matter a whole lot to me, other than perhaps giving nuance to typical fan talk player comparisons.

You at least want someone who is good/good. Ideally, a player who is great/good, very good/good, good/great, good/very good is the best possible outcome.

You have to be extremely gifted offensively if you are bad defensively to stay in the league, especially at D. Plenty of offensively minded D over the year have had a hard time getting a contract unless they are offensive wizards.

Tons of very good/bad players are AHL lifers as well.
