McDonagh...except for his last game where he was pretty terrible.
On most nights though, Staal, MCD and Girardi all play like #1 defenseman.

Eh, Staal and McDonagh are pretty even. I think McDonagh has the potential to be better in the near future though. Girardi is pretty amazing though on a lot of levels. Tough call, I'll say Staal based on play this season.

Instead of nominating one on the basis of their attributes, we would be best served to go the other way around. Putting them on the same level to start, I would take a point away from McDonagh for his still relatively "inexperienced" career, years and games wise. Girardi does most things well and is generally the most consistent in the last 2 years. Staal at his best is better than McDonagh defensively by just a bit. Offense wise, Staal is just a tad above McD looking at results. Aside from Danny G being underrated when compared with McD and Staal, it's afhawoiehfaisdf.

Staal. As great as Mac Truck was last year, I don't think he was as good as Staal was two years ago. So at their best (so far), I think Marc has the edge. And then even last year, with Staal at 75% (?), there was nobody I was more comfortable with having on the blue line than Marc come playoff time. He was beastly and was one of the few Rangers that elevated his game when it mattered most. That's significant, and not mentioned very often.
Long term, I think Staal/McDonaugh are going to be symbiotic, with Staal shutting down a team's top player who's a power guy, and McDonagh shutting down the speed ones. Like if Ovechkin was still Ovechkin, Staal's pair would be the #1 pairing for the night. Facing, I don't know, Phil Kessel, Mac's pair has #1 duty instead.
I love Girardi, but I think he's a distant 3rd. His ice time is the highest, because he's a RH shot, and has nobody eating into his icetime. Staal/Mac eat into each other's, and even still, are logging insane amounts of time.

Generally plays a near flawless game - he had a couple of egregious mistakes against Buffalo, but otherwise, he's the best defender on the team this year. Staal has been awesome and looks to be back to his pre-concussion form, but he's still a little too inconsistent on a game-by-game basis. Sometimes looks like he's controlling the ice, other times he's fumbling the puck like a grenade. With McDonagh, I usually know what I'm getting. Solid 25 minute defensive effort and a great first pass on nearly every transition play. Still think he needs time on the PP, especially over Girardi.

This year? It's Absolulety Staal. He's playing like a man possesed. His play at the end of the game last night was incredible. Calm and Dominant up and down the ice. He's definitely getting his A game back.
Over the years its probably girardi more so due to staal missing alot of action because of the concussion.

Staal is the Rangers best defenceman. He's back to his top level defence and he's finally adding offence to his game.
Love McD, but Staal is still better.
