Who are the Brad Marchant / Tom Wilson / Tough Cookie's / Agitator Types in the 2025 NHL Draft ?

The rules have changed too much to allow old style hockey players. The money is too great, the players respect each other much more than they used to. They realize the financial impact of ending a fellow competitors career. With the number of business decisions you see in the NFL now I'm not so sure I would use that example.

You can have a huge physical impact without hitting people in the head every shift. Kronwall was clean for the vast majority of his career & still sent guys to yesterday in the open ice

Poor explanation on my part. I didn't just mean dirty hits or cheap shots however open ice hits can be extremely dangerous to both players involved especially with the speed the game moves today. You are right though. You can also be a physical player just by leaning on people or using your size and strength to take or shield the puck.

Which means we need more hockey players playing football growing up. Toughen em up, give em bite/edge, physicality, dawg, etc.

Give them early concussion problems more like.

Oh, and to answer OP's question, the game is changing, it's faster and more skill-based now so it's only natural that we see less power-types emerging.

But they are still there if you know where to look.

Carbonneau for example is a low-key physical player and a real pain to contain with the puck on his stick.

Sometimes I'll watch one of his games and Carbonneau will kind of show me flashes of Brad Marchand with his speed, doggedness, and ability to shield the puck, dangle, and make plays.

But those flashes are unfortunately inconsistent. And the way Carbonneau is prone to bonehead plays as well as how he likes to rove all over the ice instead of playing a more traditional winger's position kind of give me pause as to whether or not he might have some deficiencies when it comes to his hockey-IQ.

Anyways, some other likely first-round prospects that could turn into physical players in the NHL one day include, in no order; Carbonneau, Martone, Martin, Smith, Spence, McQueen, Mrtka, Amico, Ryabkin, and others besides.

Seems these two threads should be merged -

If you're looking for someone who's possibly mean, dirty, or willing to cross the line a little bit, I'd suggest Ryabkin. I think his nastiness will endear him to NHL scouts.

Nesbitt is a physical player as well, but I'm not sure he's actively mean. Tough to find players that enjoy hurting people, these days.
